Stats like K/D are the reason. Stats should just disappear.
Stats are great, if not essential for games to thrive. Rewards for stats are a major part of the problem, and extremely irresponsible in casual environments but there should be motivation for conflict and stats help generate that. If they rewarded players for time spent alive, teams would avoid each other. If they turned rearm and reload back on, teams would avoid each other. If they only rewarded for wins at the end of a match, players would "try" even "harder" to win at any cost. Even C-bills are a stat for players as a measurement of performance.
Ultimately for a game like MWO, they should have gone the route of EVE and made players earn pilot certifications to purchase mechs for hours spent actively participating, with C-bills only used to purchase modules and components. Instead we've got players with buckets of bills willing to do anything they can to earn more, even at the cost of driving other players away. If everyone knew that no matter how many bills they had, they would still have to put in the time earning certs, I bet the community would get along a tad better and play for fun rather than winning at any cost.
