Ducking the pros and cons of balancing matches based on fixed numbers from weight classes, or the issues of lighter mechs having a harder time scoring, and the impositions those put on player choice of mech, there is a really simple way to implement it that should make matchmaking easy.

All you need is for every player eligible for said matchmaking to elect/ready one mech from each class. The matchmaker can then freely select players without worrying about specific classes, then once a full match is assembled, use the readied mechs to construct a balanced team. Note that this approach can work for any balance of mech classes in a match e.g. 2/4/4/2. (perhaps different maps or gametypes may have different team compositions).

This could be further augmented for players to give a preference which the matchmaker can take into account (especially in the case of non 3/3/3/3 configurations), but with the current bias towards heavier mechs, short of gracious/uninformed players preferring lighter classes, the matchmaker would have to ensure a fair rotation of playing heavier and lighter classes.
