curious if BAP is really needed or not or is it just me?

I seem to get caught with my pants down without it using SSRMs. a single ECM will shut me down mechs with SSRM.

am I doing something wrong?

Put a NARC on your locust instead and hope some LRMs on your team will do what your 2 streak launchers can't do...hurt the mechs chasing you before they blow you apart.

With the Locust it's pretty hard to fit two streak launchers and a bap and a medium laser.

I don't bother running streaks or lrms without bap, unless I'm running one lrm5 launcher or something just to distract the enemy.

You could put a tag on the energy hard point in the ct. It would save half a ton relative to equipping a BAP.

I would always use BAP with streaks. But nothing is going to stop 2 ECM lights completely blocking your streaks since BAP only counters one ECM.

Ive seen a 4 SSRM and TAG Locust it was pretty decent at light hunting. You could also do 2 SSRM, 1 ML and 1 TAG on the new variant.

How many problem ECM lights do you even see nowadays? It's just 2xLL Ravens and the occasional Spider, and they both prefer to fight at long range anyway. At close range when you really need the streaks, you're just fighting Jenners and Firestarters.

I'm seriously considering giving up on BAP on any mech that isn't a light hunter.

Streaks without BAP. (We tried using the BAP on one Locust, while mine used more streaks).

As you can see, lockon was nearly impossible.

Against a countered ECM mech within 100 to 200 meters.

To me that is out of the question.

Too many ECM mechs to not take BAP.

BAP offers other good benefits.

TAG is out of the question for me, since my primary mechs do not have an energy spot to spare, and since I don't carry LRM, it does nothing for me. It does good for other mechs carrying LRM, but helping others is secondary to my combat capacity.

Glad to hear that you're considering taking it out of your mech. My 3L with mlas and streaks thanks you. ;-)

Honestly, I think any kind of missiles without BAP is asking for trouble unless you're already running a mech with ECM. When I'm in my 3L and I find something with streaks, I get in close. If my ECM isn't countered, I stay there until the target is dead and then I look for another one.

And I've said it before, I'll keep saying it. Dual LL 3Ls are silly. I eat them for lunch.

I run my Oxide with 4x SSRM2's and I find BAP invaluable.
You will still get multiple ECM's causing havoc, but try and play it smart with others in PUG.

Where I find it also useful is it allows you to target shutdown mechs... gives you that free shot when a mech overheats and maintains lock.

I tried without BAP for more ammo... but I find you just have to find the right balance between ammo conservation and damage.

The nice thing about the Oxide (or any other lights with streaks and a BAP) is that sometimes you can be up against ECM lights that don't cooperate too well. When that happens, all you have to do is run away until there is only one chasing you. Then, turn around and let him have it. It's a great way to even out the playing field.

BAP is essential for light hunting. You can also use Artemis with no tonnage penalty when running SSRM, for max lock on performance. I also add the decay module to help hold the lock when chasing around obstacles and in a crowd.
