Hello! I am JagerXII, member of Steel Jaguar Gaming, Captain of Team Tiger, winners of the MechWarrior Online Launch Tournament in San Fransisco, winner of the Ace of Assassins Tournament (1v1), NGNG Podcast co-host, and aspiring twitch streamer.

I have been helping to push, shape, and drive MechWarrior Online's tactics and builds for well over a year now and would like to share my experience with everyone here. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation and bad/incorrect opinions on these forums and I am here to try to put a dent in that problem. I will therefore be holding a prepared answer and live Q&A session on my stream on twitch.tv/jagerxii at my normal times (11:00PM Eastern/ 8:00PM Pacific) on Wednesday the 11th. Twitch and YouTube recordings will be made and presented here for people that can not make the live stream times.

In a similar structure to the old Ask The Devs posts, I will take questions asked here and prepare answers for the live stream. In addition I will take questions live from the audience for an extended period after finishing the prepared answers.

Question topics may include:
  • MWO experiences
  • Tactics
  • Mechs
  • Mech builds
  • Weapons
  • MWO Metagame
  • Personal/Pilot maneuvers
  • Personal/Pilot skills
  • Competitive gameplay
  • Competitive drop decks
  • MWO game mechanics
  • Clan predictions
Feel free to post your questions here in this thread and I hope to see you all on Wednesday!

On behalf of all the scrubs:

#1. Are LRMs OP?

#2. How do you deal against a team with LRM boats?

#3. How to stay cool under LRM fire when screens are shaking and pants are wetting?

With all due respect, I also remember a very public event on PEEFSmash`s Twitch stream just over a year ago that resulted in your disqualification from a singles tournament for gaming the rules. Therefore I personally find it hard to respect you and your opinions as far as competitive gameplay goes, and I make no secret out of myself openly advocating your banning at the time.

However, should I be completely mistaken, please inform me of that error. :)

Again, I mean no disrespect, nor to derail the thread, as it has significant merit..... But that some things you say should maybe be taken with a grain of salt by some people. Posted Image

Statement retracted due to clarification.

Now that that is out of the way, what you you think of the proposed clan TCs and how they will affect the 12 man scene?

I for my part see them as strongly promoting the perpetuation of the current long range PPFLD meta (which, IFRC, we both are not huge fans of), pushing non-PPC/ac users to the fringes even further... I somehow doubt that the burst mechanics and splash damage of Clan ACs/PPCs will do much to curb it, but would like to hear your take on it ;)

How, in your opinion, can the game be incentivised for people to play non meta humping builds (or maybe change the meta to be a wider field of viable mechs since meta humping will always exist)?

I feel that I speak for the competitive community here when I say that JagerXII is one of the best Assault pilots, and one of the most knowledgeable players in the game. I suggest anyone takes any answers and advice he gives very seriously.

To keep this short, the accusations raised against me were proven to be false. However a NEW rule was created in the wake of the event called Spontaneous Collusion.

C'mon guys, no need to flame him for being a Meta-gamer.
Every single game have a top-tier meta, and highly competitive players always have to comply to that Meta.

He made a noble thread proposing to answer some players questions, give him credit for that.

Ofc, if he's a real *ss during his games, you can flame him all you want with my blessing!

THANK YOU for the swift clarification, and I humbly apologize for my misinterpretation of what went down. Now it is truly "business as usual" from my POV and I no longer see a valid reason to be skeptical of anything you may or may not say Posted Image

I never stated nor (intentionally impled) otherwise, just from listening to the podcasts it is clear that he does in fact have a wealth of knowledge....

But for me, cheaters are like [redacted], do it once and be forever in disgrace. Which is why I am glad he took the time to clear that misunderstanding up :)

Cool, thanks for making the thread :)

My question #1:
Which are the best designed maps (which create the most fun and varied matches - competitive or otherwise) and should serve as a guideline for future maps, in your opinion ?

Question #2:
What is the biggest balancing factor holding the 12vs12 meta in place ? In other words, what could cause the meta to become more varied to the point where you could see teams running significantly different drop decks and compete with each other on an equal level, each using a different strategy ?

Welp, I guess I'll toss a few in.

How well do you feel Gauss rifles fit in comp play?

Do your comp teams usually have a dedicated commander?

Which Clan mech do you feel will have the most presence at higher levels of play?

Mt Doom on Alpine - tips for a successful assault? Or is that an impossibility?

How much time do competitive players like you usually spend on this game in a week?

Cool idea Jager.

#1. I heard during the tournament podcast that the Poptart meta was predominant during RHOD tournaments and such cause it was the most versatile drop deck to handle any map. With private lobbies able to run tournaments like the PGI one, has SJR started creating map specific strategies? And if so, have you seen any changes away from the poptart meta?

#2. In your opinion, are asymmetrical builds op?

#3. To give people an idea what it takes to become as skilled as the SJR team, mind sharing how often and for how long SJR practices?

#4 Any chance are you planning on having a overview of the answers written up on the forums, post podcast?

How do you think LRM's could be changed to be useful in higher ELO ranges (specifically concerning direct-fire)?

1. How does hitbox geometry effect the viability of a mech competitively? I would imagine that at a high skill level, their size would matter less, and angle of exposure would matter more.

2. In competitive play, where do you see standard engines used, and where do you see XL engines?

If you look at RTS and MOBA though people behave with more dignity, even though the MOBA communities themselves are the worst of them all.

Anways:

Jager, On the topic of clans are the fixed engines really such a major hinderance all things concidered? The heavies seem a little oversized and the Lights a little underweight. Is this really such a major issue since we know we can adjust armor freely and have lighter weapons/smaller DHS and durable XL's?

How do feel about the balance of Clan vs Clan?

For example, the Kit Fox 30 tons at 97.2 kph vs Storm Crow 55 tons at 97.2 kph or a Summoner vs a Nova. Granted certain chasis will edge others as is now, but do you see it worse in the case of Clans, with the fixed componants? Do you think PGI focused too much on the balance to IS and not enough internal balance between Clan chasis?

Hello.
How to make Awesome, a better mech? Change Hitbox? Give perks on PPC? Or just make him thin, but taller?

Sorry for English.

I got some reports about this thread.

I'll close it while I perform a clean up.

Thread reopend!

I noted down some names. If they should pop up again because they disturb a thread with insults, I'll make sure they'll find their time to cool their heads an to reflect on their behavior.

Lets try it Egos way...

@ Jager...
  • Do you feel ashamed to run a Meta build all the time?
  • Do you think you would fair well in pugs due to the lack of all the support teammates and having to rely oin your own skill?
  • Do you feel that anyone will actually have a different meta then you someday, or you will all continue to play the same ones for assaults?

The meta ?

The Meta has been exactly the same for months. Fit as many pinpoint damage weapons as possible to a jumping mech. Small mechs fit Medium lasers and machine guns

The only thing that has changed is that they have now reduced the options from AC20/PCC Gauss/PPC to twin AC5 PPC. Every mech in the winning tournament team was fitted out in identical fashion.

It is a massive shame as one of the strengths of this game is the weapon diversity and the mech diversity.

We ought to have a game where the snipers fear the brawlers getting too close. We ought to have a game where multiple builds on the same mech are competitive, we ought to have so many things ...

Instead we have a game where the outright incompetence and hubris of the design team has lead to weapon balance stagnation.

How would you re-design the weapon balance to enable the re emergence of balance between the different mech roles and classes ?

"I have been helping to push, shape, and drive MechWarrior Online's tactics and builds for well over a year now"

Does this mean we can blame you instead of PGI for the current FLD pinpoint damage meta? :)
