I can just imagine all the kicks and passes that would either phase through the players, or suddenly they end up an extra 20m down the field with the ball.

I think I've watched Soccer once. Some guy threw a paper plane and it hit some other guy in the head. I think it was on Youtube. That was Soccer, right? I've seen it played in MWO too. It's when all the mediums and heavies race after the Locust. Reminds me of the games of Soccer I played in Primary.

Tho I am an American, and as a large majority American's have no interest in football (or soccer as we call it cuz we like to be different... heck we still use the English standard measurement system even though England whom invented it converted to the metric system due to its superiority...) I still see the OP's point. If all of the football fanatics around the world were to grab sticks and all of the fanatics for all other sports combined were to grab assault rifles, and the 2 groups were to go to war, i'm pretty sure that the football fanatics would win due to sheer numbers (and the non football players running out of ammo). It probably should have been taken into account in their plans. Besides... we don't want to be beaten down with sticks.
