Okay, I hate "Which 'mech is better?" threads just as much as the next guy.

With the Clans dropping tomorrow, I want to preorder one of these 'Mechs. I can only afford one.

I'm not leaning toward one or the other yet. Both look equally fantastic to me. I like the Nova's energy armament, I like the T-Wolf's versatility.

If you could only preorder one, which would you preorder?

As much as I like the Nova.. I have to say Timber Wolf, no doubt about it.

I would recommend the T-Wolf, it's gonna be pricy, C-Bills wise, and it's going to be a lot more versatile than the Nova.

Also, mwo.smurfy-net.de now has clan mechs in the lab, so you can customize and experiment with them before choosing what to do next. I suggest hopping over there to see the other mechs as well.

Instead of the Nova or Timberwolf, I'd suggest it be between the Timberwolf and Blackhawk collection (which gets you both the Nova and Kit Fox).

For $55 you can get a Timberwolf or for $60 you can get the Blackhawk Collection. I personally bought the Blackhawk Collection, but I like lighter, faster mechs.

Totally different mechs but I can say that the Nova and Kitfox are both a blast to play. I'm sure the Timberwolf will be a beast and very versatile but as was said earlier, for that kind of money, might as well get more mechs and mechbays.

Novas frighten me far more than Timber Wolves in my Locust...which is kind of weird. I want to get a Nova and try a MG/MED laser combo build when they go f2p, but the Timber Wolf has long been my favorite mech...and may be again, in the event I can work with and like PGI's version of the CERPPC. We'll see. The idea didn't thrill me, because the excess damage is wasted if you hit the wrong place, which makes them automatically worse than canon, and even if it wasn't wasted, the damage spread thing is kind of...ehhh. I like the idea, but not that they applied it to that weapon. It would have been better on the long tom and the other arty-style weapons.

I suppose in answer to your actual question, I'd have to vote in favor of the Timber Wolf, on account of the Nova going F2P far sooner, so you can just buy one with c-bills if you end up changing your mind.

Nova because it has the same name as me! xD But overheats so much, aptha strike in a prime nova is you dear. >:3
The Timber wolf has balacne and firepower but its just a little bit too slow for my likeing...but i love the timber wolf as much as i love the nova! :3

I have to say that both variants proof very stable during gameplay. Both have a nice Speed and Weapon balance.
But with the Nova (prime) you have to be very careful with your heat management!

Yeah you do get two mechs for the price of one with the Blackhawk collection but as some people mentioned, the Blackhawk collection release for C-bills is right around the corner plus both these mechs are going to be relatively cheap on the C-bills. Kit Fox will be about 5-7 million C-bills a chassis and Nova around 9-11 million C-bills a chassis. The Timberwolf however will be in the 22-25 million C-bills each chassis which means you could just about buy all 3 Novas for the price of a Timberwolf.

Then you have to consider the amount of grinding you have to do to save up 75 million C-bills. Then you realize your also going to spend between 10-20 million C-bills messing around with different weapons and omnipod variations and realize you actually have to save around 100 million C-bills for a Timberwolf. Then you consider that you won't be able to get the Timberwolf until November if you wait to purchase it with C-bills. Then finally you realize that the $55 price tag on the Timberwolf isn't too bad.

Lastly, you got the lighter part but not the faster part. The Timberwolf has the same max speed as the Nova and it is only about 18 kph slower than the Kit Fox.

I'm sure you got your mech already original poster.

But of the two, Nova is incredibly deadly with the power of an AC/30 in each arm even when you use the ER small lasers (and much more heat efficient too).

Meanwhile, the Timber Wolf is much more diverse, allowing a wider range of weapons, combinations and general experience.

Nova is indeed a very effective mech, but it's pretty much a one-trick pony. It's the most effective when used with the prime configuration(12 E hardpoints) and that's about it. It doesn't have the tonnage to run heavy ballistic and energy weapons, and it can't use missiles.

Timber Wolf on the other hand, is like a Swiss Knife. It can do many many things and it can do them well. It has amazing survivability and gives pretty much the most bang for buck of any clan mech.

I'd say get the Timber Wolf and wait for the Nova C-Bill version.

Timby,take the Nova when it comes to MC or c-bills.

They are both good,but Timby is more versatile.

First:

keep in mind you can't buy a stripped chassis so that means your going to pay for the stock chassis plus all those pricey clan weapons and equipment the variant comes with.

Second:

My AS7 D-DC sells for 2.96 million C-bills. It can be purchased for 10.49 million C-bills or roughly 3.5x the sale price.

My TBR however sell for 4.79 million. Therefore, it just seems to make sense that to buy it would be about the same ratio. If so, then we are looking at around 17 million to purchase a TBR on rough estimate.

This is a bit less than Sarna.net's cost of around 25 million for a TBR but still 3 chassis at 17 million each is still 51 million. Also it took me around 18 million to finalize my builds for all three variants, much of that was R&D with alot of unused equipment that didn't work out well sitting in inventory but your still going to have to come up with that initially to get your build right. Therefore, conservatively you still looking at roughly a 50-75 million investment into a Timberwolf depending on what you have laying around from any other Clan mech you buy prior to its release in November. That for me is at least a good solid month to two months of playing at minimum 2-3 hours a day.

Maybe I will end up being wrong but even if your right, 36 million is a whole lot of grinding and when you consider the Nova is a 25 ton lighter chassis that is not mounting costly endosteel structure or FF armor, it is obviously going to be alot cheaper than the 75 ton Timberwolf mounting all the bells and whistles.

So $60 for a Nova and a Kit Fox or $55 for a Timberwolf. Honestly I think they would be both about equal in total value....IF.....the Nova and Kit Fox weren't releasing until November. The 4 months of play time with the chassis you gain by buying the Timberwolf ends up making it the better value in my opinion.

The Timberwolf is argueably one of the best mechs available with the ability to run pretty much any loadout, high speed and good heat efficiency.
The Nova on the other hand is also very fun to pilot but its assault grade damage output is no joke. If you have good aim with the lasers, you can melt down any assault in seconds - but if you fire an Alpha strike, it is you who will be melting!

Can't really do much wrong by taking either of these mechs but considering your post time, you probably already made your choice

Especially now that ERMLs and ERSLs are linked. I started running a 6ERML 6ERSL build on my nova prime, and it used to be fine to fire one arm off then the next. Now, I have on three separate occasions accidentally shut myself down, and died to overheating, or someone plinking at me while I'm over heated.

Havn't tried to fire an Alpha before i didn't at least have both basic heat related efficiencies and at that point it nearly kills you if you were close to minimum heat before.
With 2x basics it will still shut you down for over 10 seconds and get your CT internals to orange. But you don't have to wait out the full beam duration to fire the second 6-group. Just 0.5 sec are enough so you can still put out the full 84 dmg in 1.8-2.0 seconds, enough to kill even an Atlas from behind unless it has higher than 22 points of back armor
