Joining groups in game involves adding people to your "Friends list" and then creating a group and inviting them into it (4 man limit right now - unless you go for the usually competitive 12 mans)
Joining a group in the social sense usually involves looking through the 3 faction subforums

you have limited posting privileges until you play 25 matches, the details are in a pinned topic in the new player help section http://mwomercs.com/...35289-recruits/
Another pinned topic offers an introduction to finding a house/unit/clan/etc http://mwomercs.com/...or-a-merc-unit/ and there is also the faction section, clan section, and hiring hall

I know there are a lot of very bitter ex-players out there.
(another reason for the posting lock)
BTW - forgot to mention - also until those 25 matches are done - you are limited to 5 posts a day.
Edit: forgot to ask - what rumors?

Like Hawken, MWO can have a bit of a learning curb. Do come back and ask if you need any information.

You can pretty much ask Koniving anything and he can give you a really great, informative answer and if need be, a 1000 word essay on the subject

This game , as many free to play ones has that somewhat ugly downside, it is grindy some say just a bit under world of tanks level.
Buying a new mech for ingame money, cbills, is not a regular occurance, for reference a good game lasts on average about 7 min out of a max 15min, and nets you about 150K cbills , for a new player 100K would be very good, a new mech, depending on the class is anywhere from 4 mil to 10+ mil. and you will always want 3 varrients of each mech so you can master it , so getting one mech means getting a set of 3 (later, after mastery, you can seel the less wanted varients and keep 1 or 2 good ones) + there will be a need for some cbills for experiments with different equipment.
A few notes: always build your mechs in an outside mechlab before using in game money at something that might not be very good , http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ ths is the builder most use. All IS mechs need duble heatsinks and most will use endosteel structure ( upgrades that add about 2 mil cbills per mech ) .
From my experiance without running premium time ( gives more xp and cbills per game for real money ) it takes an experianced player about 5-6 hours of play to master one mech , so about 18 hours of play to master one mech ( remember it's a set of 3 mechs ).
Then there are the modules , things you unlock with general xp , wich is gained at a rate of 10% (or 5% do correct me) of your regular mech xp and buy for 2-6 mil, and they give you some big advantages over those that don't have them ( new players ), like sizmic sensor that shows you movement around you if you are standing still and the new radar depravation that helps against LRM missiles, each is 15000 gxp and 6 million cbills , and the rate of gaining gxp ( with out investing real money ) is 10% ( or 5% ) of something between 150-500 to 750 xp point of xp a great game, so yeah it takes quite a bit of time for it.
And lastly there is the match maker (MM further on), the boogi man of MWO , I still curse him on an everyday basis!
At the moment there is no weight or class matching or group/no group restrictions, while the MM tries to make it close it will give way if none are available to make wait times shorter, wich means some times there will be 2 4-man organised lances on ts or mumble playing against a team with no 4-mans on there side , or even as a new player you will fight against players that played 6 mounths or more.
My advice would be to find a unit of veterans that recruts new players and have them explain the fine points of this game and who will drop in games with you, giving you a better chance of victory and some experiance at playing as a 4 man team.
So thats about it.
Not ment to scare you off, but knowing that this game is a big time sink and sometimes a very frustrating experiance ( things like a 10 game losing streak due to bad MM games ) will hopefuly prepare you for whats to come , and if you survive the 6 months mark , you will be a MECHWARRIOR SON!! x) .
PS. I would also suggest looking up the forum thread that explains gameplay rewards and ways to optimise your xp and cbill gains, like doing 1% damage to every enemy mech you can and putting good uav's up for xp.

Build before you buy.
Seriously. Smurfy is your bestest friend. Although it's a bit bugged with some S config clan mechs as of yesterday.
But seriously. SMURFY!

Also, if I'm correct, this few days if you play OP, you get a free mechbay and day of premium time for grinding more mechs and stuff. Take advantage of this, but I might have read the announcement wrong and that you might've needed to play before the last patch or the like. If someone can clarify this then thanks.

Welcome to the game.
Send me a friend request on the game client, and I will be happy to drop with you and help you learn the ropes. Feel free to ask any questions here. We are here specifically to help new players such as yourself. Keep in mind, the game has an extremely steep learning curve, so it won't be easy at all. You will be slaughtered a lot. However, once you get the hang of what to do and what not to do, you will do the slaughtering yourself. XD.

....I was trying to at least.
Some interesting stuff. This funny little video of a photoshoot (in the spoiler) can teach a lot more than one might think. For example in the leg rotation, watching the minimap can show leg orientation. Little things like weapon display colors at different ranges (impossible to hit = black). And at the end, a 4 against 1 Commando hunt!

Other vids (with a focus on mediums).
Obviously it's not all meant to be enjoyed in one sitting. Just over time, it might inspire some ideas or even teach something.
