Just fitted advanced zoom to my mech. how does it operate, ie what key triggers it?

You can rebind the key in the options, but I think the default key is "X".

See your keyboard settings in the game itself. I remapped it to E, with Q on 2x normal zoom. It works the same but you get a zoom window instead of working as the normal zoom. The disadvantage is that it zooms on your torso reticle. On maps like Alpine Peaks you sometimes need to zoom in mechs standing very high or very low and then you cannot use it. Otherwise it works very well. I also use it on night maps and turn off night vision; you see better!

Advanced Zoom is set to "v" by default, but as Isabelle said you can remap it to any key you want

On my Nostromo keypad, I use the thumb button above the hat control.

How do you remap a key? I have yet to be able to do that!

Generally double click it and it will let you pick a different key (its been sometime since I have done it).

Settings in the bottom right.
The rest should be obvious.
Note there's a bug where the double click won't register unless insanely fast.
It's a pain, but worth it nonetheless.
