I hate this jump-sniping meta with a passion. Basically every Dragonslayer I run into will tell me "use meta or [redacted]" "beat or be beaten" or "l2p noob".

More often than not my solo drops look like this:

Posted Image

I don't even know what process goes on at PGI that would make them believe their matchmaker is working properly and that this match is somehow balanced.

I run my Jester in a 2xERLL 4xML 2xAMS configuration. Some people might call that some form of "meta", but it's not PPC/AC and it's not much of a jump-sniper (I can jump-snipe with the lasers, but it's a hell of a lot harder not having the FLD).

However, once every blue moon... one of these shows up:

Posted Image

I leapt into the air fist-pumping. I kissed my dog on the snout. I ran around the building, twice. I high-fived a bunch of strangers. I kept cheering until the cops were banging on my door.

Okay that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I was nonetheless excited, especially since that was a tournament match (my highest scoring tournament match) and one of the few I managed to pull off with a Jester. I was mostly using a Jenner for the lower Elo since far too many of my heavy/assault matches were heavily jump-sniper biased.

[redacted] the trend. [redacted] the meta. Anyone else?

If it is an obvious replacement for a certain other word? Yes!
A male deer made absolutly no sense in the context of the post, so the intent was obvious and reason enough for an intervention.

Also... such a discussion does not belong into the public forums. You can contact moderators via PM and ask them for their reasons in those. Or you can report the moderation with the forum report function below every post or with a mail to support.

Fair enough, and my apologies.

The counters to the meta builds are out there. It doesn't take a genius to work out that all you need to do is get with 90m and they're toast.

Or better yet, just aim at their right torso every time you see them.

Male deer being redacted? That's the silliest thing I've heard all day. I'll never understand why stuff gets censored. It tends to mess up more things than it fixes. Luckily we don't have to worry about the whole post being deleted, and it won't tell you which word was bad, some games are horribly like that. ;)

@Technoviking
Thanks for that definition. Just goes to show how silly censoring can be sometimes.

Anyways, back to the topic.
With that said. I always enjoy it when people say "screw the meta" so they can continue playing the game they want because it always pains me to see people not having fun, using only the most effective build which they find boring.

Thanks for posting the topic.

I generally do everything I can to avoid the dual AC5/dual PPC builds. I DO have some mechs that run dual PPC and a gauss rifle... but I call those hipster builds, since that meta was so 10 months ago. I don't even own any highlanders. I do mix and match a lot, and I run LB10x and pulse lasers whenever possible, just to be anti-meta.

It seems I missed a possible meaning of bucking and screwed up because of it. The original post was fine!

As this is an international forum and my own primary language isn't english this was about to happen sometime. I usually look up words I do not know, even if they appear to be simple attempts to bypass the word filter, but this time the entry I found gave me a bad advise. It is my fault for not looking closer and I hope I'll be able to prevent that from happening again.

Please accept my apology for the edits on the title and in the opening post.

Yep. High Elo matches are full of try-hards who have to use every exploit possible to maintain their artificially high ranking. As a representative of the mid-tier Elo bracket, I salute your self exile.

You want to have fun again? Stop dropping with your pug stomp buddies every match, lose a few matches to the soulless epeen crew (nobody cares what they think anyway) and drop down to an Elo where people drive more than 3 variants.

That's sadly no solution. I didn't get into high Elo with meta builds, I got there because I am a good player. I then had to gradually adapt to meta builds, because we usually get matched against other top tier players, and the lack of coordination in PuG queue forces you to directly counter the enemy premades. Add to that the newbs, noobs and terribads we get on our side and after some very frustrating games you learn that you won't stand a snowball's chance in Hel if you try anything else than aggressive meta tactics.
Also, maybe I like to mess with the best to progress, learn and overcome. That in itself is reward enough for me. I'm having fun.
Btw Flyby, it might caress your ego a bit that we do recognize you as a good player, and the games against you are usually challenging and fun.

Flyby215 I was just in a game with you on the opposing team. My team won because it had a Victor premade poptart meta. Even if you are on the winning team it is boring, I basically followed them around the map doing nothing.

Count the number of meta mechs one on team, and the number on the losing team. Quite the little doozy:

Like you and others Flyby, I take a lot of pride in running my Muromets (3xAC5,3xML) build out in today's mech selection landscape. Many of the games don't go in our favor but i'll be damned if I give up without a fight and every now again again I have exceptional games. Actually got taken down by you Fly this past weekend with some really good pinpoint long range laser damage when you were in your Jester. Well played!

Funny, i got within 90m of a victor poptart earlier and he just killed me with his ACs because i didnt have ACs and actually had to stop firing to cool down even with 22 DHS. It didnt help that i lost a side torso in 3 alphas while trying to close.

Also good luck getting and staying within 90m of a poptart while his teammates are all shooting you (The closest target).

You're completely right. There is no counter to poptarts.

Certainly not advancing under cover. Definitely not bringing an AC20 and/or some SRM's. Absolutely not getting behind them in a light and forcing them to turn around.

What about using LRM's for suppression? Dropping arty/air strikes on them? Shielding your biggest weapons? Nope, no counters.

I see highly skilled players fairly often when I play and I rarely poptart. It will come as a shock to you, I suppose, that their team beats mine just as often as my team beats theirs.

Adapt and overcome, or whine about it on the forums. I know which is more fun. Do you?
