I have an i7-920 (Gateway FX 6800-e01 with upgraded graphics to HD 7870). Still running Vista 64. Given that my daughter needs a computer and I wanted to upgrade (computer and OS) and I received an unexpected tax refund, I have now decided to give her the old computer and get a better one. I have enough computer knowledge to be dangerous (I added RAM and then upgraded graphics card and PSU with the help of several people on this forum) but don't know how to overclock, etc. I am trying to be a little future proof if it doesn't cost too much extra. Budget at this point is $2400-2700 including 2 new monitors. I came across a CyberpowerPC SLC6600 for approx $2230-2370 (available at Walmart of all places for $2228)

Looks like it has a 4930K with a GTX 780.
16G RAM (I think it is only 1333)

I am not sure if I have the time or skill to put the computer together. I am most concerned with making sure the cooling system is working correctly and that everything is compatible and fits together. If you think it would not be that difficult for me, I might reconsider. On the other hand I did come accross a CyberpowerPC Gamer Supreme SLC6800 on Amazon for $1796.07 with free shipping.

That's an absurdly bad deal, especially since the PSU is going to be crap.


You can build a PC, believe me. Lord Letto's tutorials aside, let me make this simple: can you assemble a $15 lego set? If so, you're overqualified to physically assemble a desktop computer. Knowing all the most optimal parts to pick is where the difficulty comes in, but we can help you with that.

I've already seen some good suggestions up here. I'll see if I can improve on them any early tomorrow afternoon.

short tip:

Watercooled Systems need Maintaince, and you will spend a lot of money in shops for checking the watersystem every 6-12 Months. Check if you are happy with that.

I speak honest truth when I say I worked for a computer company in gr.6 (Ashteq Computers) I had my own workstation/diagnosing bench,I was 12 years old, My rig I hand built was at the time A pentium 233MMX with 96mb of SD ram,which was 3X the norm at the time......Stuffed with a 16mb creative voodoo blaster banshee(which i still have).I literally was the game rig repair man, I had 3 great teachers (coolest old dudes ever)Who showed me so much. Never looked back and have been modding eversince. (1995ish) now im 30 and have been building for almost 20 years lol........It really is easy.

The cool thing about building a computer is the fact that all of the parts can literally only go in one spot and there are a million tutorial videos on youtube showing you how to build it.

You can save about $1000 if you build your own, or if you have a budget of $2375 like you would spend on a prebuilt, build a super mega killing machine computer.

please please do not buy a pre-built Howser you will eventually regret the hell out of it!! these guys arent joking when they say putting together a PC is like solving a toddlers block puzzle..... go to pcpartpicker.com get your components and call it a day.

with your budget id look at a 4770k with a GTX 780, u dont need the liquid cooling to achieve a decent OC a good aftermarket fan will do. but then again your budget can likely support a nice liquid cooling system!

Potential Issues/Incompatibilities

• LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer and NZXT H440 (Red/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case are not compatible.
  
• 1 additional external 5.25" drive bay is needed.

plus lack of SLI/XFire in MWO Currently = get a good single card vs 2 good ones

They are working on implementing SLI/Crossfire - and even with it not being officially supported by MWO, I still get way more FPS on my rig with SLI 780's than my rig with a single 780 - the downside is, he would need to play on either multiple monitors or a 144hz monitor.

As for the potential compatability issues; pick a different case up to $275 or so dollars and he will still be under his budget with way more power than his prebuilt; I did not make this configuration, I just put $2400 as a budget in choosemypc.com as an example of how much more he could get for his money.

Great info guys. Was thinking of a new cheap desktop for father's day and my birthday which is also in June, since I play MWO with my son (pilot's name Lionscub) on a laptop that is running 10-20 fps, crashing all the time, having more and more problems handling the game. Seeing the posts I am thinking that building my own with my son might be a great father-son project. However I need to keep my costs low, in the $500 area, Possibly put together a basic system with a good cpu but add on a video card/RAM later. Is this possible? Any thoughts/suggestions?
