Ok well as far as the title goes, the Seraphim don't actually have a Mechwarrior rank purely called "Officer" at all! Although we do have titles such as Chief Warrant Officers, these are given to Lance Commanders.

We use the term "Commander" eg. Lance Commander, Company Commander/Captain, Force Commander/Major.

To give you a few ideas, the entire list of Seraphim MWO ranks (23 of them) can be found here: http://seraphimregiment.enjin.com/ch6

You cannot get demoted from your rank in the Seraphim unless you:
a) Resign from your rank, or
B) Somehow manage to achieve a balance of -50 forum points (where is impossible if you're semi-active at least)

Code of Honor breaches usually end up with counselling and correction, repeat offenders might be discharged from the unit if they can't be bothered following the Code, however a demotion in rank is rare to see.

I'm going on the assumption that if you obtain a well-placed rank, you want to keep it? I think this is what you are trying to convey but everyone in the Seraphim starts off as a Recruit

I believe you can jump straight to the 7th rank (Sergeant) by completing a Seraphim Training Academy course in either Recon, Brawler or Support. But as I said before, ranks are fairly hard to lose in the Seraphim... we're all about bringing people up and not about putting them down.

But with all of this being said, you still gotta earn your rank

You can be a captain. We are a unit who believes everyone who is a mech pilot is an officer and part of the leet core.

Come check us out here. <----------

Hi DD.

Having started playing MWO with some good guys in the Wolves of Vehemence (Colonel) , to Lance Corporal with ARMD, to Black Sheep Lvl1 with Black sheep, to ensign with Death Inc, to Phoenix Dominion Recruit, to etc you get the idea.

What your searching for is your own character and identity.

This is your game.

In Real Life I was a Heavy Diesel Fitter (body gave out, right knee destroyed, constant pain, anyway I digress), now Marketing Manager for an IT firm.

Now with F8L, I am "The Dare". The Dare-voted

F8L - Rank - Master.

With F8L we only have two ranks. Forgotten Master or Just forgotten.

F8L actually encourages you to join other guilds.

When you get sick of compromising your leisure gaming time, by following some made up doctrine, by people who have no real power in real life, come join us for some fun.

One group might insist on a PPC x AC5 build mech. One group may insist on real life money for you to join. One group may insist that you log on every night at the same time to do drills and wander around a map.

Play your own game, be your own lore.

Until you find your fit.

F8L will always drop with you.

In battletech lore, most mechwarriors were sergeants, with lance commanders being lieutenants (or some variant like "leftenant"). About the only exception was the Lyrans who commissioned all mechwarriors as officers, but the Lyrans were also known for their "social generals".

In real militaries, officers aren't the "elite". Officers are people managers.

In most gaming guilds, saying your and "officer" means you have some authority over other players in the guild and you are also responsible for doing work for the guild (such as organizing raids, planning social events, organizing PvP teams, etc.).

Looking for a guild that calls new guys "Lieutenant" instead of "Initiate" or "Cadet" just makes you sound extremely vane, petty, and immature. Find a group that matches your play style, that matches your goals in the game, has people playing the same time of day you want to play, and has people you get along with, etc.. The titles they use doesn't mean jack ****.

Hello, The Dare.
You got it right. I wonder why people fail to catch it.

There are many Merc Corps over here. And many different people who want different experience from their MWO play.

Some don’t pay attention to lore at all, or almost, finding their fun purely in competition. Some want to represent Inner Sphere or Clan units. Some pretend to be pirates. Some bring to MWO concepts and styles from outside the BT/MW franchise – knights, Night's Watch from GRRM's books, Browncoats from Firefly… They dress as these types for their fun and satisfaction.

I want to dress as Inner Sphere Mechwarrior Officer. What's so exceptional or special about it? This type existed in the Inner Sphere (see Kadix's reference below), close analogues exist in real life (I provided enough material in my previous posts). Yet people seem startled. I don't understand.

Yet LyrCom was one of the IS superpowers, and made heavy use of mercenaries (who probably were influenced by rank structure of their employers to some extent). So you hardly can call that practice exotic or exceptional.

But that's not all. House Liao also has all mechwarriors and aerospace fighter pilots commissioned - specifically to "show them preference due to their unique abilities". Before Xin Sheng they held a rank of subcommander (equivalent of 2nd lieutenant, with commander aka lieutenant leading a lance or flight). After Xin Sheng the rank was renamed to Sao Wei.

So, that's two Great Houses of five. Also add Taurian Concordat (mechwarriors are Cornets. Aerospace pilots hold NCO ranks though, I don't know why). I find interesting the following quotes about Circinus Federation from The Periphery:
As an exclusively BattleMech unit, the Black Warriors integrate only a few enlisted personnel, and only in support roles... The command structure of the Black Warriors follows the typical model used by most mercenary units in the Inner Sphere... Officer ranks: Mechwarrior. Though considered an officer with all the associated perks and pay scale, a MechWarrior commands no authority over enlisted personnel.
Though I must admit that Field Manual, Mercenaries contains another description of typical model.

Looking for a guild that calls new guys "Lieutenant" instead of "Initiate" or "Cadet"
Oh, don’t put words in my mouth please. I displayed my dissatisfaction about the practice of keeping mechwarriors enlisted, but I never protested against the ranks of “Initiate” or “Cadet” (I probably should edit opening post, because “right from the start” is kinda miswording here). I also stated that the rank of full Lieutenant apparently goes to Lance Leaders.

Vane? How so? I know what I’m looking for. I stated it more that once and explained it in great detail.

Petty? Why not? I play this game for leisure. If I feel that my satisfaction depends on some petty niceties, I pay attention to these niceties. I can permit myself to do it in game, it’s not some real-life delusion of grandeur that could cost me dearly.

Immature? Sure! But please, tell me. Is my want to bear officer’s tag in the game more or less immature than aligning with imaginary group of militant products of eugenics program? Is it more or less immature than paying real money for a heap of pixels on your LCD (that doesn’t even reside on your own HDD, but on PGI server)? Is more or less immature than wasting one’s time on video game or tabletop game at all?

If you really think so, why did you almost accuse me of war crimes (just above) for my want to use the rank of Ensign? :)

That’s probably what I’m looking for - thanks, Mayhem. I knew that man will always eventually get what he deserves. I apply, please let your unit’s XO see my cirriculum vitae (dangerous link cleared).

Sorry, kind sirs. It was aimed at particular person. I did my best to avoid possible collateral damage by including vague menace in my wording ("gets what he deserves"), thinking that if people would click Mayhem's link first, they will understand that I'm not going to answer kindly to this. Sorry again, link removed, as intented target has already learned about its nature anyway.
