But the first thing you should start with is select one of the trial mechs and take it to the training Grounds.
In Mechwarrior starting screen tab Home, left side, Traininggrounds.
Just shoot a bit on the dummies, then move and shoot, finaly do that on different maps to experience the map conditions. Experiment with the different trialmechs and select one that suit you.
There are bright and dark maps, hot and cold.
Get used to weapongroups and how to chainfire them.
Since you got a clock on your top screen you can do also timerunns to practice targeting while moving.
Be warned that the dummie mechs aren't fully armored and are much easier to kill than any real mech.
Your first 20+ matches you get a *cadet bonus* to purchase your first own mech.
Dont waste it. ( if you do, kill your account and create a new one )
Last thing is dont get intimidated Mechwarrior is nothing like any other *shooter you may know and not remotely similar to hawken.
Don't get twitchy, don't get impatient you will just die ..... horribly !

There are some very helpful guides in the various guide forums here on building mechs and general tactics to employ so that you don't get totally flattened in whatever you happen to be piloting. Remember this is more of a simulator than a game and you will have to think about where you are, where your enemy is and where your team is. If you don't know any of those three then your in trouble as you need to rely on your team. Most 1v1 battles end up nearly crippling the winning mech unless the opponent is new or a poor pilot.
You will need to balance the amount of ammunition you take with you and know this, ammo has the possibility of exploding in the location it is stored once the armor there has been blown off. Your best bet is to stuff it in the legs and arms but if you have multiple weapon systems with different ammo types, stuff all the munitions around in the mech. As in if you had a projectile weapon and a missile launcher, you could load a ton of each ammo in each leg and around in the arms. If you equip AMS (antimissile system) and your piloting a mech that doesn't have a head weapon (which is most mechs) the single slot in the head is a good place to put AMS ammo.
Another thing is: Smurfy Mechlab You can go here to design mechs before you buy anything and figure out what fits and what doesn't. As to how effective the load out you put on is, you'll have to experiment and play with it to find a load out that works for you.
MWO can be brutal at times, I've died two minutes into a match from making stupid mistakes and toying around with troll/joke builds and various other things. Just stick to your team and you'll be fine, fire on mechs that others on your team are also firing on. The concentrated fire will down your enemies faster.
Hope some of this helps and see you on the battlefield!

You start out with zero Cbills, so you can not buy a mech right away. You can play with the trial mechs -- they are freely available for everyone, right there in your Mechlab. Once you know which weight class you prefer, and you have enough Cbills gathered (you get a big Cbill earnings bonus for the first 25 matches), select Mechlab > Filter: Purchasable, and then filter to the relevant mech. Hover over mechs or click and select Mech Details to see what loadouts they come with. Klick Buy, and there you go. You can use Cbills for about 90% of all purchasable mechs, the hero/champion mechs require MC. (Note that Clan mechs are currently not available to buy in the game. They will be added to the shop over time.)

It still translates pretty well to the new user interface.
Still use the mechlab.
Just change the filter from owned to purchasable.

Then follow the instructions in my quote. Wait til after 25 matches though.

first you must use trial mechs to earn some cbills, I would recommend playing your first 25 matches where you earn much more per match before buying anything, after this earnings go down a lot
then I suggest asking some questions to decide what mechs would be good for you, then use
http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab
to design the mech before buying anything
but in answer to your question
there are two ways to purchase a Mech
the less useful way is to goto the store then select Battlemechs, this gives you a list of all purchasable Mechs, some are MC only (MC is purchased with real money, hero mechs (h) have unique hardpoints and a 30% cbill boost, champion mechs (c) are upgraded versions of a regular chassis with a small xp boost), anything else can be purchased for c-bills (earned ingame currency)
the better way is to goto the mechlab, in the top left corner there is a dropdown box labeled filter, select purchasable. in the mechlab you can easily find the load-outs and hard points by hovering your mouse over the mech or by clicking on the mech then clicking the mech details button, when in the mech details view it will have symbols with a number over each section, this is the current number of free weapon hardpoints, green is missiles, orange is beam/laser weapons and purple is ballistic weapons

The standard mechs are equal power, just don't have the money bonus.
With time anyone can have everything.

Listen to Koniving, there is a reason he has the welcoming committee name, notice most other players just have member or recruit. Also use Smurfy that Rogue Jedi listed to help chose what mech you will buy and alter. You can run a stock mech, but they are not as good as you can alter them with upgrades, moduals and different weapons and equipment.
The truth be told, some the best chassis are not the hero mechs and the champions are just variants of the C-bill mechs but allow you a 10% XP bonus.
Notice that there is a paint sale this weekend, but there are some paints that you can buy with C-bills that you earn in game.
As for if the game was worth putting money into, well it took me 6 months to decide that and purchased MC. Then I purchased more when there was a sale In December 2013. (that was two years in a row with MC sales during December) So far this year there was a challenge for a mech bay (300 MC), the another challenge for winning 5 games win a centurion champion mech and mech bay, then the last challenge to win a thunderbolt with a mech bay. So even if you do not purchase MC you can still buy mechs, and pick up a mech bay from time to time. I have received some items for inside the cockpit due to some challenges by winning 5 matches or more. Since December it seems that a change occurred and now more items are being developed with input from players. The Arrow hero mech is one and the upcoming hero spider, but some of the different standing cockpit items are also from input from players on what they want. Free or earning items is another way PGI has made the game enjoyable and I hope increased the number of players. I think the good way is making us earn the item with a few wins. The best way to put it is, got to get my wins for the weekend to get the free item.
If you have fun, and can afford to purchase MC, good. You can still play without MC, but you may have fewer mechs to chose from. One big thing is to get on a team speak server and play with a team. You can meet and talk with other players. Some maybe older and some younger, but it is a good group. Here is a thread listing different teamspeak servers that are open. Note even with the age most are open.
Then there are the NGNG podcasts on Wednesday nights where you can get some information and Twitch events that you can drop with the group and go after the caster if you are on the other team (it is frowned upon to kill teammates no matter how tempting.) I am not advocating for NGNG, but they are instrumental to how PGI is working with the player community now. http://mwomercs.com/...mspeak-servers/
Almost forgot, go out there and have fun. Play what you want and what you like.

Anyway - just ask some of the guys you see playing well to friend you (or ask someone here) and drop with a couple of more experienced guys and play - that's really the only way to see if you're gonna like it. And gameplay is nothing like Hawken - watch Blagg Zear or Koniving's YouTube gameplay videos and you'll see that. Also watch the B33F'S youtube videos for the laughs.
