Hello everyone.

New guy checking in to say hi and introduce myself.

No stranger to multiplayer games, but really have only played the battlefield series. Looking to try something new. Mechs looked fun, so here I am.

Looking forward to making some new friends and blowing up some robots.

Thanks for reading.

Welcome aboard!

MWO can have a steep learning curve, please don't hesitate to pop back into the New Player Help section of there's anything you need.

Preemptively, you should probably go view and bookmark Smurfy's mechlab http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ since it contains every important statistic for every mech, weapon, system, etc. as well as a mechlab tool so you can build&share mech loadouts with no limits.

Welcome aboard. I won't bombard you with information just yet, but if there's anything you want to know don't be afraid to return here and ask.

Under the list of guides that Sug produced, I highly recommend the "How to start the game" one written by me, as it mentions the Testing Grounds where you can experiment and get used to things. I know the tutorial is seriously lacking in this game (they're making a new one but it's listed under The Plan as 5% complete.)

One thing I will highly recommend is that you consider this thought: Although the battlemechs function a lot like tanks in Battlefield, they have sectional health. Left leg is independent from right leg, and the torso is split into 3 body sections. Torso sections also have front and rear armor. This is important to know as you have to get through this armor to get your kills.

While headshots are possible, the two easiest kills are as follows: Destroy both legs. Destroy 1 to 3 sections of the body (this varies on a number of things that would be too detailed to 'pick up on' right away).

If the mech you are using is small, submerging in water will cool you off much faster.

I'll also leave you with one more piece of advice: Your greatest enemy isn't in the field. It's in your mech. The generation of heat is not only a nuisance, it can and will kill you whether by shutting you down at a bad time or by causing explosions within you.

I have a video for you, this is using a trial Cicada which is a mech you can easily use as well. Though the twin computer voices are edited in, they help to narrate what's happening when I target things, when I overheat, when I do something seemingly weird to protect something (Warning! Left leg targeted!), etc. There are plenty of little hints/tips along the way as well as an epic fight near the middle-end.

welcome.

THis game has a steep learning curve, so don't get discouraged if it takes you a while to start blowing up some robots.
But do take the advice of others who have been here far longer than I (Koniving is the resident guru, listen to him)

Good luck, have fun and don't get discouraged/

Welcome to MWO.

Save ALL THE MONEY from your first 25 matches, and after you're done with that, you can buy your first mech, and even tweak it a bit.

Other than that, don't be afraid to add some of us to drop with you.

Welcome to MWO!

We have a pretty good community of players here, and helping new guys is popular. Along with the excellent guides and suggestions already listed, I recommend you make use of the 'Short Question, Short Answer' thread for anything you need help with in the future.

Take advantage of the Trial mechs (which change regularly) to try out different chassis/weapon/styles of play, before you spend any of your hard earned credits buying yourself your first mech. Trial mechs cost nothing to operate, and there is currently no repair/rearm cost for any mech, so experiment freely on the battlefield.

Adding my welcome, and remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers to ignorance.

A lot of times new players get over bombarded with information for tiny questions.

>.> Since there isn't a question or issue, no need to drop any info-bombs.

Thank you for all the replies and warm greetings.

I have played about 6 matches so far, trying out various mechs. I like the Orion, I have been doing about 300-500 damage a match, but mostly losses.

I am usually one of the last mechs alive, trying to figure out if I need to be more aggressive or not, but it seems if you pop your head out at the wrong moment it gets shot off pretty fast, so I am being very cautious.

Welcome aboard. :( Also, Smurfy will be soon very important. Give the trials a try and see how you feel after. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab

Edit: You aren't doing bad at all, if you're damaging around that range you're already good. Sometimes, it's the worry of being the last mech and doing something measly, that means something isn't quite right (like myself before). Stick with the group and be patient, that is key.
