Depends on the mech and weapons and playstyle you use i would say.

If you play a 150kph light you need other reflexes and skills then playing a 50 kph assault.
Thats what a lot of people that come from other fps miss.

Maybe the older playerbase is why we see more big and slow mechs then lights?
Except this is more about competitive play.

But yes a slower mech in a lower Elo is much easier for some one with slower reflexes. Or for that matter something with a wider margin of error say running SRMs and LBX etc.

When I was your age we had to walk uphill both ways to play Battletech Center. We had to pay to play! And it wasnt massive! You had to set up your weapons every match! Kids today!

You'd think they were in the 12-15 age bracket from the way they act in game, and spam chat with stupid crap lol
not all of them of course, but a considerable portion.

The guys who do that are usually dead, and thus not in the top bracket =D

Not only there, the mechs mechanic (turnspeed, armmovementspeed, torsotwistspeed,...) are limiting your reflexes.
If i start to turn a 50kph mech it doesnt matter that much if i do it 0,1 or 0,2 seconds later, its much more importend to turn to the right side and to forsee what will happen in a few moments.
In a light 0,1 seconds are the difference between hit and miss or your death and if you do the wrong thing you have the chance to compensate to some degree with the right reflexes.

In gaming you have 3 different "skills" that matter:

Experience - grows with age
Reactiontime - goes down with age, can be trained
Hand-Eye coordination - goes slightly down with age, can be trained, mostly based on the first years of your live

Reactiontime can be balanced with experience to some degree.
- You know how to react and maybe know what will happen, both reduces the need of reactiontime.

Experience can be balanced by reactiontime to some degree.
- You can react and adjust faster in a situation that a more experienced player would not have become part of.

Hand-Eye coordination is the part where you get a knot in your fingers and need to train it more or you dont get a knot and mostly hit the keys you want.

doubtful, since it's not twitch in the traditional full speed sense.

Still and all, I am sure that even in our generally slower environ, post 30, one will great reflex and visual acuity dropoffs, though it seems everyone I know under 30 these days has crappy eyesight anyhow.

I know my 38 year old hands are not near as fast as they once were, but then, they also have both been shattered, and my right wrist rebuilt, so I am thinking mileage has more to do with any twitch dropoff than age, in my case.

But considering just typing leaves a dull, burning pain in both hands, yeah, gaming definitely pushes the limits for this guy.

Yeah. My older hands and eyes than yours seem to do just fine, even after multiple hand surgeries and lasik.

Edit: but I'm really still a kid at heart.

at 32, i'm still kinda young, but I can still do twitch shooters well although I don't have the time to dedicate to them anymore.

I think a lot of depends on if you grew up with the stuff or not. I grew up playing Doom, Duke3d, Quake Series in my teens and early twenties and I think that has a lot to do with it. its like something you learned to do for so long.

probably another reason I can't stand the slow heavies+ in this game.... just soooo slow for me. I keep to the lights for that reason.

Then the attitude towards new players must have shifted over those 2 years.
The only thing still holding me to this game is the fact that I spent money on "MC-bills".
I don't have any friends that play this game, I don't play in groups.

If you have any tactical adult games I should know about (ArmA doesn't count), please let me know.

You don't have to join a unit, you know. Just hop onto one of the several public TS Servers, you'll find other players pretty quickly. Hop into an open channel with guys in and ask if they can train a greenhorn for a while. You can only profit from it.

BTT: This game is, like most tactical shooters out there, more about positioning and timing than twitch skills.

Well, I've tried that.
I'll continue to try that.

Coming from sims, the level of target callouts, etc. is just... not there. "The Thinking Man's Shooter", indeed.
It's more akin to CoD, where you just **** around for a while, but only pits you against players with elited mechs.

Interestingly enough, I've gotten into Lights. Had more fun there.
But I cannot find one that can mount ECM...

There's a lot of target calls and planning, but the game is too fast to do it in text. If you want any kind of organized play, you need to get on teamspeak. Even the pick-up groups over on comstar will call targets, or you can do it for them.

Lots of lights have ECM. Spider, commando, and raven, to be precise. I recommend the raven.

My Raven does not have ECM.
The 3L disappeared from the list, all that was left was the MC Raven.

Use the mechlab to buy robots, not the store. Spider 5D, raven 3L, and commando 2D can all equip ECM, but only the raven gets it with the stock build.

There's a store?
I only use "'Mech Lab"...

Only the premium Raven in my lab. There were more yesterday...
Gotta love the UI.

MWO felt like Team Fortress 2 for me for the longest time. Especially seeing those 35 tons of metal zooming and jumping around like the Scout.

Yeah, perhaps I'll give Mechwarrior Tactics a try , when it comes out. No need for reflexes there. :D

I guess I'm comparing the mechanics of it to other FPS games.

If mechs are infantrymen, rather than tanks in this game, where is our crouch/prone key? Why can't we strafe left/right?

I don't really drive lights, so this game has always felt pretty slow compared to other online shooters I've played in the past (Unreal Tournament/CoD/Battlefield/etc).
