I keep on hearing people refer to mechs as robots or giant robots...

robots are automated or controlled by an AI certainly not piloted by a human.

everytime i hear robot i think of dumb plodding 50s style toy robots with no brains what so ever.

A mech on the other hand is piloted like a carrier fighter. It has a cockpit, ejection seat and weapons and other systems under human control.

would anybody term an f14 tomcat a robot?

While I COMPLETELY agree with you, I supposed if a F14 had legs and arms people would try to call it a "robot" for some reason.

I guess if a vehicle looks like an animal, it becomes a robot.

But anyway, yeah...it's always been a pet peeve of mine when people call Battlemechs "robots."

I think it annoys me the most when people think they ARE the mech...instead of piloting it.

I call them mechs when I'm talking to people in the know, but to my girlfriend and others who have made it clear they could care less about my obsession with this game, they are and will remain "giant stompy robots."

Well not to get technical, but there have been some pug matches I've played in where some of the mechs I've seen emit behaviour more characteristic of a basic robot programmed with simplistic AI than an actual human pilot....

Completely untrue. I work with a wide range of age groups, and I occasionally talk about MechWarrior a bit for small talk. NO ONE knows what a 'Mech is. The Vietnam vets are close; they all think it's a tracked tank.

I've never seen the pilot outside of the mech. So it could be a robot. We could be in the matrix....o wait a minute the matrix had destructible terrain and community warfare....dam....
