I'm not sure why people keep feeding his ego, just ignore the Island troll and he'll eventually go away from lack of attention.

This forum needs its celebrities, they add a bit of colour. What would we do without Bishop Steiner's jaded white knight spiel, or Joseph Mallan's stories about real life warfare or FupDup's dry wit? Vassago Rain's trolling has a bit of artistic merit sometimes, so I'm happy he's well fed.

My 3 year old looked at the screen and asked if we could play Big Stompy Robots.

They're robots.

Close enough. I refer to them as stompy robots because the mechs in this game just don't do justice to the term "Titan" from 40k, otherwise I'd use that.

If people like anime they should feel free to call them Gundams or Destroids or whatever other designation they like. I'm sure we can all realise it means "two-legged fighting machine" and recognise that it's referring to the Battlemechs.

Ok; here's my problem with calling them robots, mecha, gundams, etc.:

BattleTech is an American creation inspired by Japanese mecha culture...but distinctly Western in flavor. It tried to set itself apart from its origins by divorcing the term mecha or robot, and embracing these war machines as just that; Machines of War. Mechanical...but not mecha. Mecha is a Japanese term for anything mechanical...BattleTech is...American.

In other words, these are massive walking tanks...huge mechanized armored combat vehicles piloted by highly trained soldiers. The term robot, a Czech word incidentally, has different connotations. It suggest that these machines are autonomous entities, rather than vehicles. This is not the case.

So, while technically a BattleMech can be referred to as mecha or robot, a more accurate term is simply calling it a 'Mech...because that fits in better with the spirit of the BattleTech franchise.

That said, call these things whatever the hell you want. :)

A lot of newer vehicles these days do things on their own - like applying the brakes if you're about to run into something, or parallel parking for the driver.

Are these things cars, or robots that we drive?

I disagree with the premise that mechs can't be defined as robots. Nothing says that a robot has to be self-aware, or even mimic intelligence. Classically speaking, a robot is only required to be a mechanical device which can process a series of complex instructions automatically. I think under that definition, particularly when you take into account what the C3 slave unit was capable of, it's pretty clear that mechs would qualify.

Google Cars are a bit different though. From what I gather, these things will do everything for us - just punch in where you want to go and kick back to enjoy the ride.

With that level of autonomy, I'd definitely call them "Robots with human cargo space".
