If you have hard coded the IP address then that was pretty daft.....

On the bright side, maybe once this is sorted out that won't be the case.

Don't mind me, I've resorted to excessive optimism to keep the impatience at bay.

I tried the suggestion near the top of this post and my internet went offline, and windows came up with a repair tool.
I simply can't log on
If anyone has a suggestion, a fix that works, please tell me.
Also with the amount of people with this issue, i would assume this has been caused by the recent patch, can't the MWO team fix this?
Anyway - please if anyone can help, reply or mail me

To whom it concerns,

The problem has occured in Brisbane, Australia for at least +12 hours or so that I know of. My internet provider is Telstra Bigpond. (The main one in Oz) I am not a technically minded person, but have attempted to apply the fixes mentioned upon the forum without result. These are:

1. First tried to flush the DNS. No change to maintenance message.
2. Then totally switched off computer system on number of occasions without result.
3. Next followed the link and changed the server settings for the Internet Protocol Ver 4 prefered DNS address to 8.8.8.8 and alternative one to 8.8.4.4
4. These were saved. There were no entries in these fields before this.
5. Then ran the flush through the command prompt again (as per point 1)
6. Tried to start MWO again, but still get the same server maintenance message.
7. Finally ran that nlookup thingy through the command prompt, the result of which is listed below:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Brett>nslookup patcher.mwomercs.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: a1982.d.akamai.net
Addresses: 23.209.183.105
23.209.183.89
Aliases: patcher.mwomercs.com
patcher.mwomercs.com.edgesuite.net

C:\Users\Brett>

Hopefully this helps, but I've got bugger all idea of what it actually means!

From here, I'll shut the computer down for awhile, cross my fingers and check later for any changes. But that's about it, I've got nothing and am done and dusted over this. Like I said earlier, I'm a computer illiterate and gone as far as I can without substantially stuffing things up. I do appreciate that things like this will occasionally occur and that the program has had a fairly good track record in the past. Unfortunately, situations like this, do question my faith in purely online computer games.

With the mass of information on this topic, I'm not altogether sure whether the developers have a fix or patch planned for this. If not, then by not having a user friendly, it is a less marketable product, especially if the client base have difficulties where they need to modifying their server settings to get it to run. Without a fix, I'll now be taking a break or be participating in other games. Clearly, this is the only recourse for clients / customers like myself. At any rate, life goes on and it won't be the death of me, to live without MWO for awhile. Whether this is a permanent or temporary sabatical is obviously up to the developers.

Good night and goodluck to whoever in sorting this out, as I'm off to bed to get some ZZZZZZ's.

Regards,
Draughluin

Google DNS did not work; VPNs around the world did not work.

Problem still persists...

I can ping patcher.mwomercs.com and I get a sensible IP address but the patcher still cannot to the server. Are you having a more serious problem than you're willing to admit? I haven't tried the google DNS yet, I've never had a problem like this with TalkTalk yet.

I'm Located in UK Tyne and Wear.

That's the third set of alternate IP's that have come up for the patcher URL.

Two previous sets.

I'm beginning to think that not only is this a DNS issue, but also one with akamai, which is a software distribution technology. (Not sure if it is a host, Micro$hite uses it too)

The first "Server: unknown" means that your computer is still not using Google's DNS server. Otherwise you'd see something like this:

Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address: 8.8.8.8

If all else fails you can create a temporary entry in your HOSTS file to map patcher.mwomercs.com to a static IP address (currently 50.58.243.138 for me according to Google's DNS). This is a temporary solution as the IP address may change in the future. You can google the HOSTS file to see how to make this change on your machine.

Same. DNS flush was a non-starter.

Using the google DNS numbers worked.

ISP Provider: Fios, Washington DC area - not sure if that helps.

The DNS work around has worked for me, though this issue should be resolved with out the need for the end user to change DNS settings, Thanks though I can now go back to shooting stompy mechs.

The server Unknown actually means that the DNS is being handled by their ADSL/Cable router, which in turn is getting its DNS from the ISP. In some instances, this cannot be changed due to router configuration. Routers provided by Sky for example are locked down so heavily that you cannot change ANY settings related to internet connectivity.

PGI's 'solution' is a cop out because they haven't got a clue as to what the issue actually is, though it is clear from what people have posted, nslookup results, and how DNS populates, that there is an NS record problem somewhere.

Right so TalkTalk customers are stuck with 62.24.179.222 and 62.24.179.190 so that means, logically, that all TalkTalk customers should be unable to patch...

Earlier in the thread I listed a dozen responses that I got from around the world. I'm trying to get one from someone that can confirm that those records are correct so I can manually edit my hosts file.

I've been through a lot of games and a lot of technical issues. I don't blame companies at all for the difficulties there, nor do I think a days worth of troubles is worth much complaining about. Sure, we all want our game to work. And Kyle has been working hard to get this resolved for people - definitely trying to output some results.

That being said, the condescending and rude vibe people are picking up - coupled with the fact that despite his claims otherwise, there is obviously an issue with Piranha not just...every single ISP across multiple countries means that I won't spend money with this game anymore. More and longer technical issues are less important to me than watching someone say "I'm not trying to win friendship contests" on the forums. Thats right. You aren't trying to win friendship contests. None of these people are your friends, and most likely they never will be. Nothing wrong with that. You're trying to win "customer" contests. You lost that one with a few people. And it didn't have anything to do with what you were doing on the technical side (which in terms of workarounds, you seem to have done quite a good job there).
