I recently managed to scrounge up the necessary GXP for the Advanced Zoom Module and was super excited to be able to get in some pin-point shots with some ER Large Lasers at awesome ranges.

Then I turned it on.

The blocky resolution in this "Advanced Zoom" system defeats the purpose of an advanced zoom feature. I'd rather squint at my crystal clear 3.0x zoom.

Currently, I see no added value, and thus have wasted 5k worth of GXP and 2mil of C-Bills. Yeah, I'm sure I'll earn plenty more - I'm not worried about that. It just seems silly to have all that cost wrapped up in something that doesn't actually improve one's vision.

It might be blocky, but the 'low resolution' does not realy bother me. I like the advantage of beeing able to quickly switch from no zoom to 4x without any additional steps, and the zoom helps me land those long range shots with my ER PPCs. The picture in picture mode actually saved me a few times from missing flanking enemy mechs closing in on me while i'm busy sniping. I'm actually planning to buy a few other copies of that module for some of my mechs as i find it superior to the standard zoom in every aspect related to gameplay.
I see how the fake low resolution might not be nice to look at for some people, but it certainly does not reduce the actual usefulness of the zoom.

Of course i would not mind having it display in the same resolution as the standard cockpit view, just saying that it's far from useless in it's current form.

Interesting. Perhaps I should chalk it up under 'use not intended'.

As I am looking for laser pin-point accuracy, it seems I am simply better served by the standard zoom.

I could see where it might be useful for non-pin-point weapon systems, such as the PPC, AC2, Gauss, etc.

Guess I'll just have to wait for a new module to come out.

Like i said, i would not oppose a change to a more user-friendly version of the zoom. Just wanted to state that it's not useless to everyone.

2 different roads i can see PGI going with this. either fix the res and geting it crsytal clear, then making other mods that give u even more X zooms. num 2 leave it in the 600x800 current state:P but give it other buffs. such as making the wep cross happen faster while in that mode(or not at all). for any sniper that would be well worth it not having to worry about convergance, just point and click.

The devs already posted about the zoom optic. CryEngine limits the application of this zoom because in order to give a "higher" resolution", they have to re-render the PIP, which would drop your framerate to retardedly low levels.

I have watched a few videos as well as spectated when players have used Advanced Zoom and I'm quite interested in it, mainly for my already successful Dragon build.

The low resolution isn't too much of a bother for me. It still does a good job of telling me which section of mech to point my guns at slightly better than the x3.0 zoom.

My concern is on maps like Forest Colony, would the x4.0 zoom allow me to see deeper into the murkiness than the x3.0 zoom? It probably won't but it's a good question

I've already asked this question and had it answered by the Dev's in this thread http://mwomercs.com/...31#entry1429931

having a 4x standard zoom would be far more useful, its much easier to target things using the 3.0 zoom than the 4.0 advanced zoom. That would also get around their problem of double rendering.

So any sane person would say "well why dont we just drop PIP and use 4x standard zoom?" since PIP is not going to work.

Simply not true. Yes the FPS would suffer but a PIP 320x240 picture rendered in addition to the standard resolution 1080p would be a FPS break in under 3%.
1080p is easily renderable in MWO by any grafics card since the nv gtx260 or amd 4850. Those cards are 4 years old.

Yes it would need some coding, but it is either very hard to do, nor very expensive performance wise. This game in its state right now is mostly CPU locked anyway.

Actually it's completely true, according to the people who make the game.

Tell that to all the "sane" people they are trying to please who demanded a PIP zoom since it was in previous MW titles.
