So, we were having a Discussion over in an LRM Hate thread, and the idea came up to make the points in Conquest control based, rather than capturable.
The idea here is fairly simple. Rather than out right owning a point in Conquest, and scoring points while retaining ownership, what if the point had to be held for points to be earned.
To give an example, currently, if a Light mech lingers on a point for a sufficient amount of time, the point becomes captured, and the light can run off and do other things. Meanwhile, the rest of the team stomps around in a Deathball to try and murder any opposing mechs they come across. The timer counts up, and the team with the most successful lights, or most destructive Deathball, wins.
What if, points were only accrued while a mech stayed on the Cap. So, for example, if that same light ran up to a Point, he would now have to stay on it to earn points for the team. Of course, it doesn't have to be a light mech. An LRM boat would be a prime example of a Point holder in say, River City, whereas a PPC Frontloader would be an ideal objective holder in Alpine, because of the fields of fire. As long as a mech stayed on the Pad, they, personally, would earn points for their team. You could even reward them as such, since they may very well be sacrificing damage out put for team score.
Now of course, if you have more mechs on a point, the team accrues points quicker. What's to stop the two teams from just piling onto their Spawn caps, you ask? Simple. The more points you Hold at the time, the bigger the modifier to your team score. You could still win by killing off the enemy team, but suddenly, you would see Mediums and Lights taking an active role in gaining the win, rather than just having Heavies and Assaults slugging it out. There would also be no more Light Mechs hiding out the match while the timer ticks up.
Anyways, just an idea. I shall update this post if relevant feedback provides suitable changes.

Yeah, I was definitely thinking about something like this in the LRM thread. It'd shift the LRMs into being actually useful above the mediocre and lower levels, since you know your target will be having to decide take the damage from your bombardments, or move away and lose point advancement.
It also would put emphasis on mobile gameplay.
