In general, all it takes for someone to think you're a good commander is: Being decisive, and winning. If you're decisive and lose, people think you're terrible. If you're indecisive and win, people think you're terrible.
Your conduct as a commander hardly matters, as there are just as many people that'll follow an ******* as there are someone who's understanding.

The reality of it is different, of course. That's just how perception works. A good commander is someone who can communicate well, with few words, read the battle and issue commands that'll reduce weakness or capitalize strength at the time. Someone who out of spite and "I HAS THE STAR!" let's people die and doesn't take advantage of their distraction is a terrible commander.

*If you're indecisive, you are a terrible commander by the way.

Sprint top of the mountain on Alpine - that ridge on the north side, whoever takes that first generally wins. If the team that starts closest to the hill takes it they have cover and the approach has none. If the approach team (the slope, not the cliff side) takes that ridge they have cover and can shove the other team back down into Death Valley.

I actually find that the mountain slop of Alpine is not a very good (nor imaginative) place to go to. It's best for being an easily recognized structure near the center of the map that provides some moderate advantage, but I tend to feel that the approaches and firing lanes (to and from) can be many and hard to predict. However, in most pug matches, you are correct that this is the place to go, but I refer to it as Murder Hill for a reason. It's just as likely to work as it is to backfire and get you killed.

Strategy wise, I much prefer the lesser known area of I12/H12. That higher mountain ridge is far more protected from approach, letting one gain more control over defensive position and choosing how one wishes to hit. It's easier to hit and fade back if needed. It also has a limited approach options (through the top side of the map, or from J12(?) lower side) and you can easily set up any brawlers on those slops to prevent a rush. Then, your LRMs can easily also support from any direction, even if people try to climb from the side approaches. I also find there is plenty of cover to block LRMs, as well as breaking line of sight when you choose/need to.

Of course, the ridge behind murder hill is less known, so it isn't as easy to use in a PUG match. Most people will still go to murder hill, though the Radio Tower has also been becoming a common tactic as well...

I got an even worse commander for ya..
I was in a match where some commander called out the exact same strategy, and it was still tied 0-0 with 5 mins left.. My buddy and I got bored and tired of his bossiness, so we decided to peek an exit to maybe offer a way out of the basement.. only to have the commander call us noobs and "get the F back in here", etc.. Now we got touched up a bit, but still 90% left on both of us when we came back inside. We told him to just chill out.. However the guy, who must remain nameless in the forum, walked up to my friend, stared him down for a good minute, then just unleashed 2 alphas from his DWF and down went my buddy. 1-0 enemy. Worst commander of all time. Luckily we found him a few weeks later on our team in group queue piloting a puma, and handed his ass to him. #neverforget

Should have just reported him for the team kill (and for cursing). Taking revenge upon him yourself can land you in trouble, so be careful.

But, that does sound about right. The plan wasn't bad, but the way the commander went about it isn't very nice/good. When he shoots a "disobedient" teammate.. that's when I would have even bigger issues with him. That's even worse than abandoning a teammate one might be able to help...

1. Go there.
2. Kill shite.
3. Win.

Profit. That's about all that PUGs can handle, most of the time, at least. <_<

Keep it stupid simple.

We are all pugs in the pug queue. Every map has some better tactical options teams can exploit. In solo queue though it needs to be simple and aggressive. That works consistently with just about any deck.

You can get reported for cursing? That's kind of funny, given that the ******* forums censors it, but the game doesn't. Consistency.

It's for the poor behavior. I don't know if anyone has been issued any reprimand for cursing, but when someone curses me out, I report them if for nothing else then at least for poor sportsmenship.

But it works.

I've been in enough of your matches. Most random pugs are not as horrible as people make them out to be, it's just that everyone is doing their own thing, and those things are often diverse and largely random.

Just saying "Go there, kill stuff" gets most of those players moving in the same direction. You probably won't get all of them, but if one team gets some coordination and the other team has none, the even partially coordinated team wins. Knowing there's "a plan" of some description helps them grow a pair, too.

People all being scared and hiding cost many teams victories they should have had.

Anecdotal support/story of the day:
Spoiler

More important than pilot gunnery skill, than mech choice, or loadout: Coordination and balls.

I saw a guy grab the star and order the group into an off the beaten path location in Terra Therma. It appeared he was trying to set an ambush, and one of the players, in a trial blackjack, threatened to suicide into the enemy group to force us to fight. So, he legged the trial blackjack...

I laughed pretty hard about that one actually...because I have wanted to do that myself on a few occasions where they just do not have any discipline or patience.
