Let's make it like Pimping out your car. Change the seats, change the dashboard, add some new sound systems, FUZZY DICES!
You get what I'm saying? And you can make it like an in-game buyable thing (using in-game money, of course)
And really let the player make it "his own mech". Like, a sound system; let the player have the choice of using his media to play music on a stereo system that he can purchase in the game.

And like the game Skate 2, Let's add Pilot reactions

Junk food. Half the time my joystick covered in powdered cheese from cheetos or doritos, so this would really add to immersion. Dirty fingerprints in the cockpit would also be needed.

A potted plant, preferably a cactus, named of course. With magnetic Locks holding pot down to try and prevent it from flying around during impacts. Also a bottle of aloe Vera or some such nearby to deal with the inevitable cactus impact on pilot.
