I understand. The bug or feature is most evident on the Centurion which can absorb insane damage into it's blown off arm socket.
Well, to be fair it works the same way on all 'mechs; the Cent just happen to have rather big left-over (not blown off) arm debris when the arm gets blown off.

That arm socket can take more damage than an Atlas center torso.
Hmm... Can it? Let's see:
AS7-D CT: 94+62=156 points.
CN9-A ST: 26+24=50 points, but hitting the arm debris only transfers 50%, so 100 points.
CN9-A CT:36+32=68 points, but hitting the arm debris only transfers 25%, so 272 points.
So yeah, to core a Cent by only shooting its arm, you need to deal 372 damage to the arm debris; more than twice what you need to go through a pristine Atlas CT. Count the arm itself (32+16) and you're looking at 420 damage, 2.5 times the Atlas CT.
On the other hand, you only need 112 damage to destroy both legs of the Cent (32+24 each leg), much less than the CT of the Atlas.
Go for the legs. Always go for the legs.

Doesn't PGI say that is working as intended though?
Yes, it's a feature.
Incidentally, for those of you who still haven't figured it out, the Spider has very similar arm debris as the Centurion; it's the Centurion of lights - something that plays a major part in its "unkillable" reputation.
Edit: Pristing?!? Pristine.
