It could honestly be far worse then it is. I've played quite a few Free to play. Most of the time a company spends the money to create and promote. Once it's launched and sufficient player base is established. They pull the dev team off it and assign a few guys to keep adding cash items and with some content every few months.
MWO is far from perfect. And they do introduce a lot of items for MC. But it could be far worse.

Well a little over a month ago I would of opposed this, but sega decided I wasn't aloud to play phantasy star online 2 anymore. So yup, this is pretty much as good as it gets. This is the only shooter and the only free to play game I play anymore. because despite all its flaws, its just good fun to stomp around in giant robots and blast each other. No other game on the market captures that feeling even close to as well as this one.

Not sure what OP is talking about. Hawken is pretty great. I prefer MWO's style of play, but Hawken blows MWO out of the water in terms of polish and presentation.

Ugh, Path of Exile. It's... technically playable? o.O It's awful, though. It's really hard to go back to games where you have to grind out a specific build after Diablo 3 let you switch things around to try new stuff. But also, all the powers are redundant and stupid, and most of the level-up abilities are just incremental stat boosts. "Here's an extra layer of equipment, except this one you can't change."
Firefall... I quit a while back during the massive massive nerfs where they also introduced a hideous death penalty. That was not a good combination. It looks like it's moved back into a sane place since, but I'm still kind of traumatized.
MWO is worrying me with some of the changes. As long as they don't put in something stupid like repair costs, I probably won't have to quit from acute hatred, but taking away everything fun bit by bit can kill it too.

Dota 2, LoL, Planetside 2, War Thunder, Sins of a Dark Age are all excellent free to play titles.
MWO pales in comparison

Firefall is a typical themepark now game now. They gutted the crafting, made thumping harder while removing the the ability to find truly rare materials from it. They added in quest level ranges that lead you around the map to make sure you are in the appropriate leveled areas. They gutted the combat and made it almost purely a shooter (seriously, all abilities have something like a minimum of 45 second cooldown). SInce they switched to level ranges and less sandbox, there are less dynamic chosen events and very rarely any invasions and worse, they are in even more predictable places (thus they've had major issues with people power leveling abusing the predictable spawns).
Basically it is nothing like what they described it would be when I bought into it.

Good thing we convinced them to include Mechlab. That's why. Inclusion of Mechlab was pretty hotly debated.
