Cuz you might want to buy something and don't know how to.... you know. Select them to buy. Cuz everyone with a stable of their own mechs apparently runs trials all the time?
No clue man. No clue.

Charge twenty people twice, and two will pay twice. They're looking for hammered window shoppers.

I wish i had an answer. It's not like anyone whould waste money on a champion mech for that completely useless bonus it has.

So that people who have bought enough MC accidentally misclick buy and have to buy more MC if they still want mech bays.

Just think, PGI worked on overhauling their UI for 2 years and this is the product of that 2 years of reworking something they already had.
I can't wait to see what 3 years does for the community warfare they don't have.

It's not like it would be actually hard to remove those trials from the owned filter. PGI just has zero incentive to do so.
Face it, this game isn't about you and your 'mechs, it's about PGI and their bank statement.

I never saw any problems with the old UI style. UI 2 had too many internal hands in the stew. Pretty much marketing ruined it.
To whoever is in charge of this:
Did you go to college? Do you consider yourself to be a computer programmer? The set of things which only contains mechs that I own DOES NOT CONTAIN MECHS THAT I HAVE YET TO PURCHASE AND YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS

quote because it deserves to be in here twice
now to answer. "why?" - because fixing it would make way too much sense and is therefore *forbidden*

It's entirely on purpose. New players get used to running trial mechs, so when they want to buy a new mech they have easy access to mechs that cost real money, and have to navigate an unintuitive UI to buy mechs with c-bills.

I guess since technically they are there since you can run the trial mechs in games, not needing to buy them to do so.
There are competitions with stock or trial mechs. Some Clans use them in their Clan trials. Though for convenience having a seperate category for trial wouldn't really disable the UI for those players and would help to exclude these kind of on-loan assets.
I have to agree that OCD > Sales here for pilot concerns.
