I used to be optimistic like you, but then I took an Arrow to the kn...errr...sorry.
Honestly, I don't think it's unrealistic to expect published target dates to be met or, when they're not, to have someone carefully outlining why they were missed and issuing new, more realistic and obtainable target dates. The fact remains that CW has had several target release dates now stretching back the last couple of years. We've already missed several of them, along with target dates for other things that haven't even been commented upon since (anyone remember that decals were scheduled to go in sometime last spring/summer?). Thus, I think some of the skepticism has been earned.
Now, do some people wallow in the negativity, revel in failure, and dog every misstep that PGI takes with derision? Sure. However, those of us with more of a "we'll believe it when we see it" mentality have a basis for those beliefs. I want to see the game do well. I'll give credit where credit is due, but I'll also criticize where it's warranted.
In the case of CW, skepticism and criticism of project management of that module is very much warranted. If they manage to get their act together and deliver this time, I won't dwell on those past mistakes, but until then I can't help but have them shape my expectations.
Skepticism and productive critiques is fine, no problem with that. I have a wait and see attitude also, I remain positive because I don't have unrealistic expectations of what it takes to produce this or any game, especially with a small team. I'm more or less content that they are working toward their stated goals, and trust that they no more want to screw over this game and their source of income any more than I want to screw over the small company I work for.
With that bit of realistic perspective, it's easier to keep my eyes on the prize without forsaking my own happiness in the meantime. I mean look at me...I'm still holding a flame for the Flea. It's been announced for 2yrs, but I haven't given up, I know it'll be released eventually...likely as time and resources allow, provided it doesn't get in the way of more important projects...and you know, that's ok.
Granted, this coming from a guy who support one subscription MMO for 12yrs....played for the first 8 of those years. I believed in the project, it was a small team and it was self financed. I played until I was bored, then kept the subscription going until my wife made me stop.
That other game advanced a great deal from release, it was slow going, but they did their best I know. They never completed their grand plan, but considering what they have done with an old Unity engine from 2001it is superb. It's dated now, likely won't ever reach it's planned level of development, but I love those guys for what they did, with what they had, and for so long. At times, I still have the urge to play, but after 8yrs of play and no major additions to the game, Im just not motivated enough right now.
Anyway, I feel the same away about MWO, I'm willing to hang around as long as PGI commits to developing the game toward their stated goals. If they stop, or change the development of the game toward something else of no interest then at that point I'll quietly leave.
