Since I've been reading these forums for the past month or so, I've discovered that a lot of the real hardcore amongst us use a lot of abbreviations, some of which even though I've played all the software versions of Mechwarrior, I was not familiar with.

So maybe an Admin could pin this post so other players, less familiar with the games, can find it easily and use it as a resource.

Here is a link to the Sarna wiki dictionary for battletech.

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Dictionary

Unfortunately it doesn't include a lot of the abbreviations/acronyms that get tossed around a lot on these forums, so maybe we can start a list to help others. If soImeone could find a better online resource for abbreviations, I think it would be a big help to all the new players.

I will be adding to the list as more abbreviations are contributed in posts below

Great idea. I was wondering if the abbreviations could also be grouped into Battletech and MMO groups. I am new to MMO's so not to informed on all the PvE PvP abbreviations?

Here are a few shorthand things for your list:

DOT or DoT: Damage over Time

IS: Inner Sphere
FWLM: Free Worlds League Military
SL: Star League
SLDF: Star League Defense Force
CCAF: Capellan Confederation Armed Forces
LAAF: Lyran Alliance Armed Forces
FRR: Free Rasalhague Republic
KungsArmé: FRR Military

Liao; CC: Capellan Confederation
Marik; FW; FWL: Free Worlds League
Kurita; DC: Draconis Combine
Davion; FS: Federated Suns (I prefer "FFS," however) ;)
Steiner; LA: Lyran Alliance

LAMS: Laser Anti-missile System (3059 tech)
LAMs: Land Air 'Mech, plural, (deprecated; to be republished in Interstellar Operations)

TRO: Technical Readout, a canon source for 'mech specifications

and since we shouldn't assume that individuals know anything at all about the BT/MW universe . . .

BT: Battletech
MW: Mechwarrior

Not a bad idea. I'll toss a little upvote to get this pinned.

When I used to run my old unit: Clan Thunder Wolf, In addition to 'Mechs and skins, etc... I provided new members with a "MechWarrior Glossary of Terms". It was invaluable to getting people up to speed.

I hand-typed the 2 or 3 page beast for maximum readability. Perhaps we should do the same on the Sarna wiki site.

Just found this one out a few days ago: When you see a mech described in terms of #/#/#, those are the walk/Run/Jump Jet movement amounts in hexes. Seems to be more of a TT thing but as I understand it, it transfers into KPH in the video games.

^^^^
BTW, correct me if I'm wrong

TT Movement translation:

1 hex = 30 meters

TT movement is expressed as x/y/z (these are movement points, but don't worry yourself about that)

x: maximum straight line walking speed, in open ground hexes; also the maximum reverse speed
y: maximum straight line forward speed, in open ground hexes
z: maximum jump distance, in hexes

for the value of z, multiply by 30 meters

here are the values to convert x and y (tolerance of +/- 1 kph, even the TROs are not consistent):
1 = hit "eject"
2 = 21 kph
3 = 32 kph
4 = 43 kph
5 = 54 kph
6 = 64 kph
7 = 75 kph
8 = 86 kph
9 = 97 kph
10 = 108 kph
11 = 118 kph
12 = 129 kph
13 =
14 = 151 kph
15 = 162 kph
16 = 173 kph
17 = 184 kph
18 = 194 kph
19 =
20 = 216 kph

Initial post Updated.

I know I'd appreciate it if the TT players would contribute, as those are the terms I'm least familar with.

Remember though, I'm primarily just looking for Acronyms, not definitions. People can look the definition up once they know what the acronym stands for. Thanks!
