Over 550 distinct chassis even after you weed out all the apocryphal 'Mechs. Over 500 if you combine omni and IIC versions with standard versions. Some of those should not be combined because they are quite different from the originals. Narrows down greatly if you only do 'Mechwarrior video games.
So there is quite the surfeit of choices. There is much disagreement over the worst 'Mech ever, let alone the best.

MW4 was dominated by the Executioner, also due to the way the customizations worked and the poptart meta.

It's been a long time (20 years), by I recall buying mechwarrior 2 for windows 95, and it was packaged with a MS 3D-pro joystick, netmech for MS-DOS, and I am almost positive I used to fire up the old 14.4k baud modem and rampage around in a marauder.
But after 20 years, the memory may not match the reality.

The Only Inner Sphere Mech I remember in MW2 was a Battlemaster... And yeah Memory is indeed fuzzy here as well.

Timberwolf is up there on the list, it was the first mech I ever piloted (Battletech on Sega Genesis).
Mad Dog, became one of my faves in mw2.
Nova.... nuff said.
MWO came along and introduced me to IS mechs... Dragon, Thunderbolt... Atlas.
Timberwolf, Nova...
Like I said I can't pick just one.
