I don't really think there needs to be a penalty; the incentive not to kill teammates is already quite strong (i.e. you want to win the match, and get more earnings for that.) I think it would be nice if it showed you team damage at the end of the match though. We know they track it, because they've used it as criteria for tournaments in the past. They just don't post it to the client for some reason.

I suspect that if players saw they did 200 team damage vs. 600 to opponents, they would modify their behavior on their own

ed: also yeah, a lot of the problem currently is the IFF bug. Even if you know about it, it's not always obvious which mechs are on your team if there's a lot of ECM flying around.

Better to keep it simple with a specific cutoff number. I like the ~100 damage number. Degrees of painful are relative. The same 10 points of damage can be as painful to an assault at the end of the match as they are at the beginning of the match for a light.

That's what I'm getting at though, 20 damage to a locust is a lot more painful than 20 damage to an Atlas but that 20 damage to an Atlas at the end of a match can be just as painful. That's why I talked about having it tied to a teammate's current health.

20 damage to a mech with 400 points of armor isn't much
that same mech 5 minutes later at the end of a match only having 100 points of armor left
well that's a much more painful shot.

Aye, but I'd rather they were paying the same attention at the beginning that they would have to pay at the end. Damage being cumulative and all.

Sometimes I actually take calculated friendly fire. I'd rather absorb that last 1/10th of a second of your laser to get to where I'm going, than stay exposed to 4 - 8 enemies, or sit around where I see some smoke go off.
Most of the time though, friendly fire is accidental on the giver or receivers side. Sometimes it's just ignorant players who really aught to practice better trigger discipline. That "Light hugging the enemy then complaining about taking friendly fire" is pretty easy to not shoot unless you're just drooling into your keyboard.

yes and no, face hugging lights often take FF from things like LRMs and the shooter in that case has zero ability to avoid that.

A damage threshold of 100 seems reasonable to me.

About the lrms hit your allys, maybe a range threshold would help, like counting ff only if its under 400m.

Someone running if your line of fire, this can allways happen.
But the shooter is responsible for his shooting, dont pull the trigger if an ally is in front of you.
Just ask the military guys in this forum about it.

Ask us military guys about NOT walking in front of a friendlies field of fire in the first place.
