Some other games do it (minecraft, etc). But PGI's servers probably have enough problems as it is...
Actually, I'd say it's simply because what's involved in creating a texture is too complex for most users. For example, this is the RGB map for the Cobra pattern:
And that's just for the Battlemaster. There's two texture files and one material file for each 'Mech for each pattern. And as you can see, it's not just an overlay. It had to be specifically mapped on.
In this manner I can see why there hasn't been any patterns lately, as it does seem a lot of work, and it only increases as more 'Mechs are added.
However... today I realised something that I feel very silly for not realising before. Previously I only ever used the one-shot patterns, and assumed that the 'unlock' version meant permanently for each 'Mech. Especially considering the price, you'd expect that. But I discovered that in reality, it's only for one chassis. ONE chassis. That's... ridiculous. That's more than $210 to unlock it permanently for each 'Mech.
So... I was about to spend $20 on a few extra camos, but I ended up spending it on Space Engineers instead. PGI, that much for camos isn't right. I'd rather not see community textures priced at that anyway.
