I'm was in a fresh 6UAC5 Dire Wolf. I encountered a fresh Cataphract.

I focused and shot out the Phract's right torso. It took about 7 volleys of 6UAC5s to do it (which seemed a lot).

Immediately after I killed the Phract, I was killed from behind, end of match.

The post-match score screen showed I had done 348 damage. Yet that Cataphract was the only target I'd shot at. No other targets, no use of strikes.

How could I have done 348 damage, and why did it take so many 6UAC5 volleys to kill that Cataphract?

Any suggestions on how that works out? Thanks.

Maybe hitreg issues caused not all shots to deal damage, but the "missed" shots still counted towards your score?

Well, theoretically it's possible to do 348 damage to a Cataphract without killing it; it has 434 armour max (+217 internal structure).

In practice? No idea, except that you can't have hit just that side torso, possibly due to server/client desyncing?

Ammo explosions count towards your damage total, you probably got an ammo crit and crits in general are "bonus" damage.

Yeah there are problems. I engaged a Summoner in my Nova last night when he was down to orange internals. I had to have put at least 8 burst of 3 ER ML each into his CT and in the end, he cored me out and killed me. I mean that is at least 160 damage and even if I spread damage across other sections, I only needed about 20 damage to finish him so no way in hell he should have survived.

Luckly, it doesn't happen all that often but it absolutely does happen and when it does, it is beyond frustrating.

STD or XL engine?

90 IS+A for the STs and 132 for the CT. Add arms and legs for twisting and JJ defense, and you can spread cACs pretty easily.

If it was an XL, that's a bit harder to do, but not impossible. Perhaps you found a competent player.

Hits that do not register dmg still count in your score. I have had matches with LRM Awesome 8R with 800 dmg, where I only fired on 2 mechs, one time it was a HBK and a raven that i took only a few potshots at to chase away. Yes, 800+ dmg with maybe 2 salvos of 60 LRM that only partly hit raven, and the rest onto a HBK.

I have seen this with LBX10's on my Illya, and almost all the time with lasers.

HSR favors one hit weapons like PPC and IS AC. That has been in indirect driver for the meta for years. Lasers and it's like do 0-100% of dmg on any given shot. It is always better to do 100% of the dmg most of the time then random% of dmg all the time in a game like this, dependability and predictability of the dmg you will do for the risk you put out is supreme in positioning and planning your actions.

So what you see, has been happening for years. Most have never noticed.

Hey I did 505 damage to a single mech but it survived, as written in the thread below. How about we both just admit to being lousy shots? :P

don't forget if you take out a side torso, you also get damage credit for the arm component destruction.

Damage generated by crits to internal armor does increase your damage score... see MGs.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't spraying it around THAT much :) Even if lag meant I missed the RT at the very most it should have sprayed onto the CT. But there was still a LOT of damage registered higher than that (and yet it seemed to take a long time for him to drop).

I had several team mates spectating as I was last Mech to die. They saw me hitting the target.

I guess it has to be components/crits and other stuff.

The thing that doesn't fit that description though is why it took so many salvos to take him down.

There's a big difference between hitting a target and hitting a target in the component you need to kill it.

XL engines, no JumpJets as it was an ILya.

Interesting, I didn't know that happened.
