I think it's funny that after all of these years of playing Warrior on line..
The main components of the Game Table top game of MechWarrior have been grossly overlooked.
This is somewhat of a shame because it had more in depth descriptions of how the meat and potatoes of how the game really worked..

Like the 85 components of how targeting Really worked.
how Targeting worked,
how sensors worked separately from targeting.
How sensors worked.
How you could "upgrade" the targeting computer,
And how Pilot skill and gunnery Skill differed. And affected the game.

For instance on the the Sensors Upgrades of a Targeting computer could asses the Threat level of the opponent Pilot. and display "Veteran"

Here its all a half baked, Hodge-Podge of mess of things thrown together without much thought.. And quit honestly its getting out of hand quickly..

Knock it off with the modals.. It's not a pilot upgrade, its not a gunnery upgrade..
Its a target computer upgrade.. There is no Skill to it.. So stop calling it a skill..
upgrade

And I promise there were not that many computer upgrades.

Re Name the Skill Tab to Warrior Lab. ( I know why Talk about mech Warriors in Mech Warriors.)

Separate The Skills lab into Pilot Skills, and Gunnery Skills
Next Implement a Ranking system for the classes..
Implement Classes.
Make the rank sliding depending on performance. You can gain points and lose points. (kind of like ELO.)

Novice to Elite. (example)
Pilot
Novice 0 - 25 1+(%) Movement, Speed, Jump, -1% overheat ( 2 mod slots)
Expert 26-50 3+ to above (2 mod slot)
Veteran 51-75 4+ to above (1 move slots)
Elite 76-100 5+ (1 mod slots)

Gunnery
Novice 0-25 1+ % Range, accuracy, -1% cool down. (3 mod slots)
Expert 26-50 3+ to above (3 mod slots)
Veteran 51-75 4+ to above (4 mod slots
Elite 76-100 5+ (4 mod slots)

Next lets Class mech warriors.. (again examples)
and perk them out.. Like you see your mech, you should see your pilot.
You can change the avatars like a mech.

Soldier (the common man who will fight for king, country and a paycheck)
+5% Damage, +5 armor%, +5% Targeting
(novice Level )

Scout
+10% sensor range, -5% targeting, +5% Speed. -5% damage Priority airstrikes.
(expert to elite)

Combat engineer
-5% damage, +10% armor, +5% Cooling
(expert to elite)

Mechwarrior
- 5% cooling, +5 Movement, +5% tageting
(veteran to elite)

Commander
+10 Sensors, +10 Targeting, +5% damage
(elite)

Specialist class

Sensors (+5 senors, ecm, targeting,)
Balistics (+5% ballistic Weapons damage)
Laser (+5% Laser Weapons damage)
Missiles (+5% Missiles damage )
Sniper (+5% to Targeting Ranges)

You get the idea.... Im saying instead of all of these Convoluted Modual, how about adding a depth to the game, and hiding all of these convoluted upgrades into a MECHWARRIOR.

(things listed are only Examples, values / names / ect. are subject to change.)

Aurrous first off great ideas but like so many Online MMO/MMORPG/MMOSIMULATIONS these days they lack true depth of game play or social aspects the older games had. The new developers make minimal viable products for huge $USD and most don't care to build or work on the games once profits start to disappear because of lack of content or the skilled staff to understand in depth game play.

Here is a post from another thread about the golden days of MechWarrior I wrote Everyone wants a in-depth MechWarrior game but most never knew what really drove this IP to be great in the first place.Less than 1% of all the old MechWarrior pilots still play or even know about MWO period or are dead.

DasSibby said (I think we're seeing the beginnings of a MechWarrior golden age. What say you? Have the developers come to live among us mortals?)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would hope for a new MechWarrior golden age but first you have to understand what was the first MechWarrior Golden age to begin with. It started in 1996 with MechWarrio2 becoming Game of the year and a new online edition with netmech.

(On July 24, 1995, MechWarrior 2 finally managed to see the light of day. After several delays, fallouts with the development team, and threats of cancellation, the game would go on to win several awards and become a benchmark of three dimensional gaming in the mid 90s.)

(The MechWarrior 2 engine was still used but with upgraded graphics with terrain texture mapping and enhanced lighting effects and higher resolutions. A completely new musical score was devised for the game as well as an updated version of NetMech, called MercNet, which included native Internet-playing ability.)

From there all the expansions and MechWarrio3 was born and produced at that time there were around 500,000 players world wide playing PVE or on net.mech Kali or ten.net.

After this came the real golden age of MechWarrior which was in-game with NBT Leagues,MPBT3025,MWL Leagues ,and the Most Famous MSN GAMMING ZONE over 1,000,000 players world wide played on in-game servers for MechWarrio2,MechWarrio3,and MechWarrior4 and there expansions.

MWO would have to bring back a chat/lobby launcher system for private matches and private league to even come close to a golden days of MechWarrior I suspect right now the total player base of MWO to be as low as 10,000 players full and part time.

P.S I was there through it all and it was a hell of a ride and so much fun it is unbelievable to assume one IP could have brought you so much entertainment.

It's a neat idea, but I would look at a differnt set of names for the rankings, such as:

Green (we start here)
Regular
Vet
Elite (we cap here)

This is a throw back to the TT pilot ranking chart in battletech, the place where the root of this game is.

If we go and look at Mech Warrior, the RPG element that was added later, we could focuse our skill with one type of weapons over others, for example you could be good with lasers, great with missles and crap with balistics. In later versions, you could be kick ass in lights, but crap in assualt mechs and average in the other two weight classes. And in even later versions, you could go so far as to be a total bad ass in say the AS7-DDC, but get totaly owned in a AS7-K.

As for "classes" we would have to narrow it down a bit to say:

Scout
Flanker
Support (Support could be a command unit or fire support)
Brawler

In most of the weight classes you'll find some units that can fill those roles better than others.

As to the guy above me, I remeber the first time I fired up Mechwarrior 2 on my Dad's DOS machine, that was a great game, but I think MW4 hurt the series, as it gave us the silly hard point system, and was far more arcade like.

And of course in some respects your right When the MechWarrior 3 which had a lot of innovations no other previous MechWarrior titles had like MFB's Mobile Field Bases came along and is expansions the developers knew the old crowd which most MechWarrior2 players were 35-79 years old were not going to be around to play a in-depth MechWarrior game.

At that point the game was made more arcade like and 50% of the innovations and in-depth game mechanics of previous titles were left out in game production. When in 2002 the MSN gamming zone shut down and left basically 500,000-800,000 MechWarrior pilots flat on there asses and a new MechWarrior5 which I have played the beta of the original game made by Microsoft and still on there shelf's unfinished which was a throw back to MechWarrior 2 died it was all over for this IP for 10+ years.

Mektek tried to reinvent the MechWarrior4 game with its innovations but they never understood the player base or what made the IP work either so it limped along for 8 years with less than 10,000 players to support it and it died.MWLL tried to bring back MechWarrior2 it was a valiant effort but because of lack of funding and a better game engine it failed as well.

MWO could have been game of the year if the MWO devs would have understood the IP itself and what made it a great IP game and a unique among its competitors.

And that is what the community made of the game after the developers released them from 1,000,000 active players to over 100 varied and unique leagues to play the games on 24/7 7 days a week.
