I'm a little sick of seeing this ;-)

The "board game" (TT) has maximum customisation! The only restrictions to customisation in TT is weight and space (i.e. the minimum possible restriction). There is no other BT game with more customisation than TT - it's not possible.

From what I hear it's the BT novels that have very little customisation. It certainly isn't TT.

Fair comment and duly noted.
But my point isn't about the board game, it's about the attitude of people toward the topic of this thread, which is about in-game customisation. Perhaps it'd be better if I said that those who wish to stick to pure BTech lore with their mechs (BTech fans, don't get upset) might have a change of heart after they've played a few scenarios.

Most people like customisation:

And as for hardcore story canon fans changing their minds - I doubt it! :) (I'm not one, BTW - give me more mechlab!)

Still think that if you want more options out on the battlefield, you're going to need more customization. Otherwise people WILL NOT buy mechs that are considered underpowered/too slow/etc. So you'll see the same restricted set of variants out on the battlefield for every freakin' battle.
Boo.

What i have always loved about battletech - is you could make variants on stock mechs. It's built into the lore of the game ... from novels to mission books based on famous units etc

The reason why i loved it was i could take a design that i liked the look off , and tweak it to my gamestyle..

Wolverine vs shadow hawk ... same tonnage etc, if you stripped them back / changed engines / armour weapons they could be the exact same mech (55 tons from memory) - but they looked completely different.

I can vividly remember the Heir to the Dragon book where they sourced supplies from Comstar - and ardan sortek was suprised by a Charger that had LRM's

IF it's good enough for the lore and backstories from day dot.... good enough for this game

What I think most people in here with the LET ME CUSTOMIZE attitude have a hard time to understand is that if you put in restrictions like hardpoints the customisation is not reduced, it is in fact just tuned up, as you have to take the mech and mechvariant itself into account. It is a bit like simcity. Without hardpoints you could mostly build your city(mech) on the flat surface while with hardpoints and such restrictions in place you have now rivers and hills included which makes it harder to build that cool maybe perfect city(mech). But after all the hard work you will end up with plenty more interesting mechs.

I think that is something most of us want. It might just be the degree on how much freedom and restrictaion in the mechlab is right which we need discussing. And after all, it is up to the devs not us to choose it right.

if they want to have full customization i'm not totally against it because I know alot of people love that... but I hope there is also the ability to run stock matches with only stock variants... I have no idea if that is possible or even fits into whatever warfare system comes about.

but even if that is not possible... what I've seen of the mechlab I think it is a fairly good compromise... I think the devs have the right idea with the hardpoint system... Goldilocks MechLab... not to rigid, not to flexible

i think full customization takes away from the reasoning behind having so many specific mech models and standard variants... and then it comes down to just putting your favorite weapons on your favorite chassis skin, which IMO causes the battlefield to devolve into a bunch of MadCats pewpewing.

Seems there are some who are more worried about "boats" haven`t taken ONE key thing into account...MAP ENVIRONMENTS....Now, I realise most of us who aren`t in BETA don`t know how the maps are setup, other than some of the videos. But...would you REALLY take a missle-boat to a map that has limited open areas? Remember the map in MW4 called "Inner City"? Was nothing but streets, and huge azzed buildings. You`d waste a lot of ammo lol. Same with laser-boats. Remember in MW4, the map Dust Bowl? Take an all beam weapon mech in there, and you`d spend more time "asleep" than fighting.

So in that respect, you need to really think out builds, and not just make "boats". Lets all keep that in mind, k? :)

The lab is what it is, but it doesn't follow the source book rules of being able to strip any mech down to it's frame and customize it back up within the limits of available slots to balance engine, equipment and weapons.

Putting a XL engine in an assualt mech is a good way to get owned when they target your chest armor.
