I didn't vote "I never pay" because implies I do play but don't pay, which isn't the case.
In the case of MWO (and I can see why this topic was brought up), I'll be going as far as an Elite pack, and then possibly a prem-month every 2x or 3x month, so most of the time I'd be free-loading.
Tbh I'll work it out so I'm paying about as much per year on MWO as I would on maybe one or 2 retail games.
Oops never considered that option did I lol

Makes both of us.
Loved STO. Some of what is being done on it is great, actually Fleet Starbases sound amazing. A year down the line and that game will be something very unique.
But PW turns me away.
This game is sucking me in. Not just the game but the developers. Good decisions being made and delivery of everything seems to happen with great control.

I added an option for those who have not yet played an MMO, don't want you feeling left out
I guess I'll come out and say it then:
My name is RenegadeMaster, and I'm an MMO noob.
I wonder who the second user is that had the same poll answer. My anticipated spending is $120 or less per year. If my new home falls apart or if this game's premium/pay features are more awesome than I expect, I may ask friends & family for in-game credit/giftcards when my birthday or Christmas comes around. Hopefully PH will make it easy for in-game credit to be gifted from non-players

In the past, I have played F2P games and never paid a cent, while had pumped over several hundreds on some.
If the I like game and the Cash Shop catches my fancy, I will spend the required amount.
For now, let's just set a $500 cap and see what happen when the game comes out.

There were other expenses as well.
Initially it seemed like a lot, but in reality, I have spend far more on far less entertaining things, and I had a ball doing it (Despite the amount of abuse I would receive)

Anyways I haven't been subscribed to one for more than a month or two at a time since my WoW days, and I haven't cared about that game since 2008. Tera Online held my interest for a little while but I barely even touched it for the last month so I'm not renewing my subscription. Great game, utterly beautiful to look at, just nothing to do endgame.

And THERE! IS! NOTHING! that you can buy with real money in-game that affects the gameplay IN! ANY! WAY! IMAGINABLE!
But... if I found an MMO to which I would stick around that requires you to pay2play, I would, without any remorse.

It was me, when GHQ added the extra option.
I've played a load of mp games over the years, but the only comparable game I've played was a fortnight dipping into Project Torque, about 5-6 years ago which was a pretty basic MMO racing sim, which put me off the FTP model for a time, and pushed me back to the sensible world of FPSs like Quake & UT.
The "MMO" part of the equation imo should be about the fact there are myriad groups all fighting over the same patch of galaxy, *NOT* about the game mechanics so common to World of Warcraft type games where players have to grind against the machine in order to level up their muchkin, who just disappears into the ether as soon as the game is discontinued.
The factions (Houses, Mercs, Clans if/when), and the persistent galaxy we fight over, the to & fro of planets being won, lost & fought over, the rivalries & alliances played out by other players - Commonly shortened down to the meta-game - This is the prize we're after.
All the other game mechanics that people associate with MMOs (XP farming, grinding, levelling-up, etc..) can be completely chucked by the wayside so far as I care, and would only serve to detract from the rest of the game. No game should ever be a chore, that's just failing at the first stage of designing a game.
In fact, even the limited XP system we have now could go for me, C-bills to buy mechs, battles to kill them; Job Done.

Between the founders pack and necessary upgrades I'm into this for about $500 bucks and not sweating it. MW forever!
About those free hobbies, then there are those antibiotics - they cost money.

So I'm kinda still in the $200.00 bracket between the 3. But then I bought a certain Legendary Package...
