Do I wait and wait and wait, for that perfect C-Bill mech to buy? If I am the free to play 'player' and I am sitting on a ton of C-Bills, I am not so sure that the Dire Wolf is the right mech to grind. My Highlander is doing just fine against all of the Clan mechs. Is a 6 month wait to long or worth it for whats to come?

I think its worth the wait for that specific mech that you may see.

If you're happy with what you have now, I'd say wait until you see something you *really* want. Dire Wolves aren't nearly as OP as people seem to think. Granted, they have ridiculous dps and alpha potential, but that's it - They're slow-moving walls of armor and are easily flanked by anything faster than them (which is literally everything unless you put a 200 engine on an Atlas).

I think I've found that "perfect mech" - I can't even say how many C-bills I've spent buying new mechs (and even some MC) and just hating them, eventually selling them. I even spend a ton modifying them to suite me better, to no avail. I don't know why I even bother with other mechs, outside of the Atlas, Jager and Direwolf.

I can dig that, I love the Jag but since the heat and AC nerf it just cant brawl with the clan mechs, The highlander is faster and has a bigger punch.

Come to think of it, Summoner's are quite a bit of fun. People say they're weak and all but I've seen plenty of them do 800+ matches. That's not to say, you would prob need all 3 chassis.

Hell, I've seen Nova's do 1200 damage matches.

at 10 hours per week, it takes over 2 years to earn enough for the wave 1 pack. You need to choose what you want here. Choose wisely.

I've seen 1 guy do a +1000 damage in my last 100 games or so, I like the Summoner though, but same prob, do I blow my wad on 3 of them and regret it after a clan nerf, and I'm not saying they are, just would be a little disappointing because that's what happened with the Jags with me.

I say go for it.

I've enjoyed grinding my DWs. I use a four CLBX5/ four CMPL build. You can swap between chain and group on the LBX's. It's pretty decent.

^^ This.

Google and forum search functions are your friends.

Do your research, read the reviews, read reviews that say the opposite thing. Experiment on smurfy's for loadouts that are feasible for your cbill budget. Do everything in your power short of testing the mechs that tickle your fancy. (coz your cbills will be gone by then).

When I was a beginner in MWO I got a CAT C4 with my cadet bonuses. Because I was familiar with the franchise and wanted to learn how MWO treats the LRM support role (something I knew I had to eventually learn anyway if I wanted to be able to counter it).

Didn't buy into more CATs though. Because the more I researched, I found that the (then) newly available Shadowhawk variants had all the hardpoint types. I decided that SHDs would be cbill affordable platforms for experimenting with the different weapon types (which would aid in forming my own opinions).

Even then I was frugal with my cbills. Endo, DHS, an ER PPC to try, an AC10... I just swapped my stuff around (especially the 275XL of my SHD 5M). By the time I mastered them I had enough cbills to try an AS7 DDC.

So I got one (but not before building options in smurfy). Serendipity! My first AC20! Tried that on a shadowhawk for a while.

But then PGI puts the ILYA on 50% sale and I went down the slippery slope towards becoming a whale.

Hey PGI! Good thing I had previous knowledge of the franchise and wasn't completely in the dark. I think I did well enough in shaping my own NEW PLAYER EXPERIENCE. It is sort of sad that too many clueless noobs are being ganked in the public queue (without the benefit of any institutionalized guidance, handholding and spoon feeding). But then again, finding solutions on the fly and defeating one's own limits is part of the franchise's charm (at least to me).

Here's hoping others may be guided on their journey.

I regret buying my illya. its so slow, and doesnt feel very effective. But I fell in love with the Catapult, and love my Jester. I wish that they would allow people to test out any mech they wanted so there was no buyers regret. Like renting 3 mechs for a few days. Dire Whales are pretty good, but I would wait and see how the Devs talk about it. If they plan on nerfing it, wait and see if its suddenly useless. Dire whales are all over the place because they just came out.

Renting with MC or Cbills?

You'll run up into the customization problem. Could be better to rely on your experiences and Smurfy's numbers.

I mean once a week, for say 3 days, you can pick 3 mechs and they are added to your inventory for free. If you buy items for it, those items are added to your inventory when the trial is over. this lets people find a perfect build, and make sure it works on the mech, then they can just buy the mech and reequip the items you bought for it.

Seeds of an idea. Quite feasible too. Just some UI design in the mechlab.

I'd say wait it out. I hit a point where I wasn't very interested outside of what I already had. That lasted awhile until I decided to try out Griffins and ended up loving them. At some point you get that "hankerin" to try something a little different. I'm actually starting to look at Wolverine's now :P

Ilya is a touchy beast. It was one of my first mechs and still one of my favorites. Another one of those ones that you just don't want to face tank. Then again I'm one of the crazy ones that likes to run XL's in her

Thats what led me to the Highlander to begin with but I only did the 'expert' grind, I couldn't bring myself to master all 3 to get the only one I would really use that extra module, it would be nice to have but not worth grinding all 3 for it. Maybe someday I can just C-Bill it.

Extra module slot is for unrescuable addicts (like me). Be thankful you have self control.

Here's what you do. Pay attention to the TEST server and times it will be available. Buy some MC and let it sit. Next server TEST spend your MC on whatever hero you want to try out. Do the same with your Cbills.

This is how I decided to purchase other mechs with my CBills. I got to run them fully skilled out using my banked GXP and completely customized because I wasn't wasting anything on the LIVE server.

That how I decided not to buy mechs too.
