Considering lights, and just about every other person who simply can not resist getting in close to scrap metal, should they not be damaged in some way by their own weapons fire? But if a spider is hugging an atlas's or direwolf's legs while spraying their MG/etc, should they not also be damaged by splash?

No, to splash damage!

Done
It may also keep others from running into other people. Being able to change the range (zoom) on the mini map would help in that.

For missiles? Sure, but only for actual explosives. Particularly (S)SRMs, though only one single component should be damaged by each missile for anyone that's actually in range to be damaged by it, including self damage - Splash should also be very small so that while noticeable, won't be destroying an entire lance of mechs 120 meters apart - Damage falloff should also start to happen fairly close to the center so you take next to no damage beyond some ridiculously short range.
For everything else? What. Not even an AC20 fires explosive rounds or rounds designed to shatter on impact (and backwards apparently?).
I can just hear those servers overheating and melting down from calculating splash distance/damage on a lance of LRM70 warhawks from here.

Similar problems wouldn't even exist, if only this game had collisions and knockdowns from weapon fire.

This is probably going to be one of VERY few posts in which I agree with Ego...
No thank you.
