But then it turned out to be just really fracking dangerous and not nearly as hot as expected with a bit of fire discipline

I think I may be playing Direstars way too often, becasue I´m slowly getting better with them than I ever wanted

King Crab from yesterday with 2 AC20's, stock Standard 300 engine... and nothing else. As far as I could tell, he removed all long-range capability from the mech to fill it full of AC20 ammo, which he needed with all the shots he took at targets at 500+ m away... I have no idea how people conclude that a build like that is good.

Blame that on PGI for a lack of any useful in-game info on how to build a mech. The forums can work, provided one only sticks to the mech weight class specific ones; if you tread into the cesspool of the General forum, basically anything you say will be greeted with the response "git gud or git rekted, stupid noob" - and heaven help the new player that finds the Faction Warfare forum and mistakenly thinks he'll find help there!

As for the rest, I'd have more sympathy for people with horrible builds if they listened to honest advice provided without snark or malice in-game. I'm far more patient in-game than I am on these forums since here people have plenty of time to read and formulate their responses (and it's their own fault when they post drivel, don't read, or simply make things up as they go.) Unfortunately, based on my experience, the best you can hope for in-game when honestly trying to help somebody with their build is to be ignored; worst case, they spew venom at you.

Why limit your mockery to other people? I know I've done some dumb stuff, often intentionally, occasionally accidentally. Hell, I drive a LRM 4X10 + LB5X EBJ in CW. Weirdly, it seems to work pretty well there.

I drive an XL400 Boar's head with 3 PPCs and an AC10, a weapon the IS version of which I absolutely adore.
I've driven a triple AC10 Ilya Muromets.
I still troll around in a 12 flamer Nova sometimes (I actually had to cut back on the flamers to put an actually damaging weapon in).
Best of all, I'm a Locust pilot. That's like a headshaking build no matter what you do, but I especially love the super-1V with the LPL.

If you see one of your builds in here, don't hate. Think about why that build makes people facepalm, and assess whether it works for you (Locusts) or if they're right to be depressed (dat Nova) when they see it.

Oh, and I do have more time making posts with builds in them than I do making posts in this thread. No hostility necessary.

i see the reason for the lrm5. most folks can't understand a mixed build.
