Let's try something completely different....
How about we split the drop queue: Assault + Heavy only and another queue Mediums & Lights only?
The sad reality in the current free-for-all format... It's neigh suicide to drop into the tourney with a Medium or Light... Statistically the participatory mech stats support that a far higher percentage brought Assaults and Heavies compared to Mediums and Lights...
I can tell you that I personally would find a reason to drop in a Medium and or Light if I knew those were the only weight-classes I had to comparatively engage!
I think the end results would be far more enjoyable for all participants as I argue the the actual play mechanics would foster some extremely competitive matches...
Thoughts?

Splitting the que might not be so easy, as a matter of fact you neglected to mention the difficulty.

I think after the T-Wolf goes C-bill they should have a tourney where you get points for damaging a t-wolf but only if you are not in a t-wolf.
You can have that one for free PGI!

No snark intended...
But it cannot possibly be too difficult. Especially taking into consideration they are able to filter IS vs Clan as well as extrapolate class-based composite scores to determine class winners. Not even mentioning the recent ability to separate factions...
Much like the private filter many of us have played with... PGI should be able to parse the granular terms of match play in such fashion... right down to separating the class-based queues.

I still haven't figured out the recognition it provides where it tells you the percentage of chance you have joining a battle with a certain weight mech.
Might be easier to have the tournament only recognize light/medium 'mechs when dropping solo so if you drop in a heavy or an assault you won't be recognized in the tournament. Kind of how previous tournaments worked where it only recognized certain variants of 'mechs as tournament participation.
