Detractors are always a very vocal part of any game's population. They've been predicting MWO's death for a while now but I don't believe it. If the player population was in terminal decline then PGI would have laid off its developers or moved them to another project. We know that's not the case, though. They are working full time on developing new features and Russ Bullock has recently taken a more proactive approach to communicating with the community.
The recent Town Hall meeting had over 3000 live viewers, and there are plenty of hard core fans who didn't even watch it live. My feeling is that the game is doing just fine.

Frankly, I feel that there is a good population playing. I have short wait times for matches, generally speaking, and often see names I do not recognize. I would encourage you to dive right in and play. If you're concerned about spending money on the game, then hold off and observe things for a while. Nobody would fault you for that. However, personally speaking, I think that the game is here to stay and have spent a good bit of money on it to show this.
Friend my in-game if you like and we'll drop some together. This game is tough on newbies, so I don't mind showing them the ropes if needed.

Exactly! PGI even tried to launch another game recently, although the detractors shut it down. The company appears healthy. If you check their website, they were even hiring engineers recently. That's not a sign of decline (take it from an engineering student!).

I wouldn't pay much mind to the rage page when it comes to mindless rants of how horrible their gaming experience is. I've played this game for a while (maybe almost a year? ..I forget, heh) and I've seen players just start flying off the handle because things don't go their way.. calling other players newbs 'cause they're dead and looking at builds while spectating.
Some rants are productive while others give me the impression that "someone is in need of a long overdue nap." Keep in mind that just because a handful of players are having a bad experience doesn't mean that EVERYBODY is having a bad time and the ones who "hate the game makers" are just frustrated that the moderators aren't bending to their every whim.
Griefers are not wanted because they actively try to ruin the experience for others.. I seriously hope that they don't bother you enough to force you to make the decision to stop playing.
As the definition shows:
grief·er
ˈɡrēfə/
noun
informal
noun: griefer; plural noun: griefers
(in an online game or community) a person who harasses or deliberately provokes other players or members in order to spoil their enjoyment.
"a class of entrepreneurs is emerging who see griefers not just as an annoyance but as a potential source of lost revenue""
Outside of that, have fun and take care!

We do try to foster a supportive communty here in the new player help section, and you won't find and cursing and screaming here
MWO is currently on the way up, not down, with the long-awaited Community Warfare feature coming in the next few months, lots of sales of the clan packs (boh last June's clan pack 1 and the upcoming clan pack 2), and a huge increase in how and how much the devs talk to the community.
I think the game still has a bright future ahead.

Three things to remember.
PGI was able to extend the license last year from Microsoft
PGI had taken over the publishers duties
PGI had taken a more open policy with development, and with community warfare there might just be more advertising than when the game was launched.
All are good signs to me.
All I can say is good luck and have fun. If you enjoy it enough, spend money how you want.
There are MC sale once a year in so far in December 2012 & 2013. Then the other sales every weekend. Spend $100 on 30,000 mc instead of 25,000 MC. then buy everything at 50% off through the year. So you could get 60,000 MC worth of items for $100. Too bad I purchased a few things at full price, but I wanted that cheerleader in the gridiron.

I've love this game so much that I started another account, to level up again. PGI, since their divorce from IGN, has really been throwing out all the stops to make the game even better. If you enjoy, the game, stick with it. Maybe open up your wallet in a small way to support the running of the game too. I've spent close to 750$ on the game in the last year and a half I have been playing. Which is shocking b/c, before MWO, I had never spent a dime on a micro transaction game. I personally love the game and want to support it, so if you don't want to pitch in financially, do so by playing and making friends. There is a silent majority out here that abstains from flame wars, but loves the game.
Welcome to the community.

You can say this about everything and anything, just have fun and worry about the other stuff later. If you are that tight on money that spending a little on something and losing it upsets you maybe this isn't the place to spend your money? Not my place to tell you such a thing but i dont see this game packing up next week.
I give to this game when i can afford it. That's how companies stay alive.

Simple fact is it's just really, really fun: enough depth in customisation to diminish the obligatory F2P 'grind', pretty enough that it feels like it's a real game and with a dedicated enough fan base that you know there is always the chance to play 'serious mode'.
I deride many of the decisions made but I still enjoy MWO more then any(many) other multi-player online games.
Once you pay your Double Heat Sink Tax your mechs will get better.

The game itself is doing fine and has done better this past year over the previous years. So it depends if PGI reverts to previous practices or continues on its current practices. Currently I tend to have hope it it considering I purchased the latest clan wave on top of the last two mech packages.

Stick with it.
I haven't been around long (8 months) but the game itself has been around for something like 2 years already....
