Well OP, I officially declare you Battletech awesomemaster for that victory.
I have not had many games myself but I to am a Marauder pilot, mine being a standard Marauder named 'Scarlet Lady' a reseen 9S variant.
Maybe, one day we will have our rides... I hope in time to face the Clans ;)
Anyway, if your ever around the Preston way drop a note on Red Steel Preston and i will meet you for a game.

Thanks for the thought. ;) I like to keep the story circulating so people can see that good sportsmanship never goes out of style, and never let a bully push you out of a hobby you enjoy. Also, the Clans can be beaten, whatever their advantages.

Awesome story indeed, as for the whole wanting their admiration, considering they had deliberately set you up to fail, and then blatantly cheated throughout the game itself, it was probably too much to ask, and their praise would have been as empty as their sportsmanship. Still, you got the sweet pleasure of beating them at a game that they had rigged in their favor. Not many people could do that.

Call it the naivete of my youth. Retrospectively, I realize it was unrealistic to expect. A little courtesy might still have been nice, eh? :/

Great story, and yes it really takes me back. Make no mistake about it, I am clan through and through, but much like Aidan Pryde, I view myself as saving the people of the inner sphere from the corrupt houses, not conquering them for more power (and there is no way I could EVER support any group that has anything to do with Comstar). But you freeborn, will have my respect if ever we meet on the field of battle, I will do my best to see you die a warrior's death. :)

Well told.

Is any of this duplicated on the current bg.bt forums or anywhere else?

---

Have your other encounters with mechforce (us, uk, germany, etc) revealed the same attitude? Do you think it had anything to do with mechforce passing on?

Speaking of which, what's been your personal experience with the commandos.

Me, I live in a BT wasteland, which is really odd, given that we have a university town here.

I think I may have posted the account to Battlecorps many years ago, but I honestly don't remember. This would be the second place I ever told the story, though I recounted it on Facebook recently in my notes (copy/paste - yay). I wouldn't be surprised it this helped Mechforce crumble. It was far too easy to rig games this way if you were the hose (as we see in this example) or to just outright lie about your conquests. I think the honor system was well abused.

I played with one commando locally who was running a Quick Strike demo. He was perfectly cool, but some feeb next to him eventually started chanting that he didn't trust my dice. They were only rolling about average at best (and I rolled snake eyes on those things FAR too often - in fact, they were House Davion dice from MW:DA). Clearly, I'm not a fan of being called a cheat, so I never went back. We get all kinds in the BT community, and some bad apples are to be expected, I suppose.

YEAH YOU DID. You jerk. -_- Well fought though. When I came around the corner and found multiple hostiles I thought "Ahhh, crap, here I go. Might as well Blaze of Glory this." I'll get you next time, Gadget. :P

Okay, this might amuse some of you. My friend says hey, well and good that you're been Davion since all the way back when, but being you can do some Clan Invasion gig on MWO, why don't I play for the -clan- side for once to balance things out? LOL. I'm seriously considering it...! Jags, or Falcons? :D

Rush, that was a fantastic story, and I am very happy to hear you put them in their place. I find that I do something similar most weeks, as I am a Phoenix Hawk LAM pilot, running a squadron of 4 PHX-HK2M LAM units, often to deadly effect.

I totally forgot that I had the link to this thread in my signature! :P

Glad you enjoyed the story. And I have remained Davion, for the record. See you on the battlefield. My name is the same there, of course.

Thanks, Kosmos. I kept a written record of the story in some form or other since it first happened so I'd remember something really positive about it all, in spite of the negativity. I've only posted it publicly maybe twice in the 24.5 years now since it happened. I hope it shows other people who unpredictable and tactical Battletech can be, and encourages sportsmanship in MWO today.

yes and hope the same sports man ship is important in any game game that have bad communitys tend not to last long
and its a very good story the helps to prove being an a** does not pay off i think some of the people playing cw need to read this the lack of sportsmanship out of some players has been pathetic there is a big difference between the light hearted jokes and ribing before a match and being a bad sport

This is sooo what I use to sell Battletech to new players. Risk vs. Reward. You have to find that balance in your play that lets you win, and that makes it different from other table top games out there today. You dared big, because you had nothing to lose. And they tried to play it safe, thinking they had nothing to gain. In the end, fortune favored the bold. At my FLGS I work hard to teach good sportsmanship along with the game rules. Win lose or draw, the important part is having fun... for both sides.

I agree wholeheartedly. Gaming is supposed to be fun for -both- sides. Then, win or lose, everyone comes out on top. These guys didn't get it, and I don't pretend I taught them anything with the object lesson. But I think the right people understand the point! :)

Enjoyed that. Thanks.

Had something small but similar happen to me many years ago on playing one of my first MegaMek games. I was on one of the peristant servers running 3025 tech. I don't remember much specifics, but I remember getting a light lance with most jump cabable to start out with. My opponent had been playing for awhile and seemed to have a much better lance. I could see I was outmatched equipment wise early on. Before he was able to get within position to use his longe range arms, I decided on a plan of action where I moved my lance to a bottom corner on the the map behind a large hill. He had to get in close then to fight. I used a couple of rounds to jump and position my mechs so that I was able to use all 4 at once to make a charge on each of his..... the virtual dice rolls were in my favor. Two of his best mechs were knocked off the board! ........ his client then disconnects. The opponent reconnects a minute later, apologizes, but the turn was not saved. He didn't even have the intestinal foritude to replay his same previous moves now that he knew my stratagy. He held back, wittled my lance down till he won, then it was gg and bye. Is it wrong to wish a few hundreds years of purgatory for that one?

Sounds pretty fishy to me, LCPL. I never did get Megamek to work correctly. But then, I've always preferred live, face to face Battletech over the digital varieties, including MWO. MWO is an amazing ride so far, but tabletop gives you all the options no video game adaptation can. That said, I do need to climb into my new Zeus and see what it can do.
