Either in close beta, or just after, they had Forest Colony with no haze. The long range sniping wars were abysmal and unfun.
It didnt matter how pretty the Map was back then.
All anyone saw was predator vision.
Remember the early days of the Gauss Cats? Spawn in, take 3 steps to the left hit HV and proceed to headshot the Atlas before he got off his spawn grid.

There are many times (entire HPG, overhang/tunnel in Crimson, anywhere but water in Forest Colony, tower side of River City, some areas with buildings in Frozen City, most of Mining Collective, pretty much all of Terra Therma, and occasionally in Canyon Network) where I, due to the unnecessary fog they have in the game and the low variation in color, must lean in very close to the screen to make out the faint lines signaling the presence of a mech. Not needed as much when they are moving, but still shouldn't ever be necessary. (unless camo causes it, but that goes away for me past a certain distance).
(btw that is with and without zoom)

No reason to be snarky. Sweetfx is not the answer.

Q: May I use graphical enhancements through third-party applications, such as SweetFX or other CBar modifiers to enhance my graphical performance?
A: We do not encourage the use of these types of modifications and in particular should we detect the use of any modification that does any of the following we reserve the right to suspend/ban the account responsible.
a) Alters visibility significantly from the original product to gain unfair tactical advantages
b ) Changes game assets sounds, models, or maps, to gain tactical advantages
c) Attempts to circumvent the map selection process
d) Exploits bugs or existing game mechanics

They don't encourage its use, but that doesn't mean you're not allowed to run it.
SweetFX doesn't give you a tactical advantage beyond what you get from reducing settings to eliminate fog.

is that not to the letter, the definition of a tactical advantage.

You misunderstand.
SweetFX doesn't give you any advantage; the advantage gained is via reducing settings - that's done without SweetFX.
You can remove fog and distance blur (assuming settings controls work) simply by disabling PostAA (when it can be disabled) and reducing Post Processing. Reducing Object Draw Distance cuts out a lot of scenery that obstructs view but not shots, like trees and such.
My point was that SweetFX doesn't give you any advantages, the advantage is gained via in-game settings.
SweetFX can change the colors, lighting and such, but can't target specific things: you can't make enemy mechs brighter while not affecting the terrain, for example, and that's where they'd be concerned.
As such, no, SweetFX doesn't give you any advantage.

Forest Colony with some real greens and colors would be lovely. It's a forest, not a gray blob. Make it brighter, increasing visibility. To reduce the visibility back down, add some fog and clouds! Make forest colony like a mini-smokey mountains area. Some fog banks rolling in and such. Also, make them white, as it'll be brighter again, remember? Not a godawful grey. You can focus the clouds/fog around the water area and possibly near some of the more worried about sniping lanes. By sniping lanes I mean the "unintended" clear view areas that heat vision and night vision cannot reach. So say if there was a 1000m stretch where people could snipe, and heat and nv let a person see 600m, and you didn't want them shooting that 1000m distance, toss a fog bank there, now they can't see through it for sniping, eliminating the problem. It gives people a reason to change vision modes in the map, and it adds some visual variety to the map.
Variations of light and dark, such as on the mining collective, are also a good touch, as some areas favor changing vision modes. Another good example of an area on the map that encourages vision mode variation, and visual variety, is seen in the Caustic Valley main caldera. The smoke plumes can be seen through with night vision, but add some visual flair and give cover against enemies that don't toggle their vision modes. (To anyone that says "they'll just shoot the red box", carry some ecm )

I always thought it was strategically placed fog of war.
