This is where you are contradicting your own statement:
In your previous post you've already stated that Kills are essentially necessary for winning most matches and I will just add that there is only Kill-Securing in this game. Even if someone is out for a Kill, he got it because others on the team could not. He got it 0.1 Seconds earlier, so the enemy could not fire one last alpha-strike.
Sure, that's fine.

So what if I act very selfish and only got assists. leaving behind enemies cored, stripped, legged - thinking that some other idiot will certainly grab the kill? What? No complaints?
The only opinion I have is this. The compunction
for most people to collect a kill
is far greater than those people who will avoid grabbing that kills themselves. K-D padding is still an incentive within itself.
What do you think is more egregious in terms of overall
team contribution? The player that waits solely until that guy is crit and finishes him off, or the player that avoids getting the kill for the purposes of scoring? Both are doing a disservice, but having a guy that's intentionally being useless for 50+% of the match... is going to generate more ill will than the guy who refuses to collect the kill (someone else will get the kill, and pad their own stat).
Leaving people to their own devices... if kills were rewarded better than assists in the scoring, we would have more tourney-like complaining about how people completely try to deviate and solo. Better players will succeed, while the majority that we have in the queues... are going to foster lots more bad team behavior, getting themselves killed more often than not.
In any case, for the purposes of scoring... the lucrative method for the challenge is NOT SOLELY with Assists. Here's the hint... it's the reason why LRMs (and ECM) are in play. You can collect more than 12 Assists by just spotting... with TAG or NARC. While this is obviously less desirable for bigger mechs (speed to get to a match is one of them)... it's giving the smaller mechs an opportunity to benefit.
