I know a lot of people freak out when they see 12 guys with the same unit tag on the enemy team, but I'm going to let you in on a little secret: a lot of them are not very good, or very coordinated at all.
If you stop resigning yourself to defeat before the fight even begins, you might find that a lot of 12-man teams are very beatable.
Edit: And also, keep in mind that 12 man team's Elo is inflated because they're in a large group. Assuming a relatively equal Elo for each team, that mean's your team of smaller groups is actually comprised of individual players who have a higher average Elo than the other team's players - it's basically a more skilled team vs a more coordinated team.

That's because in my experience, unless you know what group it is, and the names they fielded, it's a team PUG, not a competition team. They may be drunk/stoned/jokebuilt, not paying attention, just messing around, socializing, teaching or just plain there for the sake of someone else to get the glory.
You just don't know. That is why knowing the names of pilots beyond prolific forum warriors and watching who tops leader boards or is in the standings of public tournys helps.
