Why is the starting mech an Urbanmech? It's a 30 tonner - wouldnt a 20 ton Flea be more fitting?

There has been a .lot of speculation on the boards as to how you can choose your starting mech. The main thing is that there will be a mechanic in place that will allow you to choose not only the mech, but the mech class. In other words, you will be able to choose the weight class of the mech. You don't start off with a light 20 tonne and work your way to an Atlas, you instead choose the starting mech, and then work on it to gain access to different weapons and skills. This isn't a "a assault mech is always better then a scout mech" kind of game. Each mech class has a role. You work on that mech class to gain more experience with that mech, and on your pilot in general. If you want to be a scout instead of a walking wall, you have different activities that gain you experience, then standing there and trying to damage the Assault mech with your single medium laser. Instead, you gain exp by painting the target for a lance-mate to "bring the rain". Or you get exp for sneaking past and capturing the enemy base, or whatever the objective. If you choose a mech at the start, and love that mech, then your exp in the mech will make it viable in the game. In a way, it also kind of removes the whole concept of "endgame", or at least blunts it.

And here we go...

If you CAN start with an Atlas, Imagine the repair bills you would have at the end of each fight! That's why ppl should buy at least 1 light mech to grind cash to pay for the big ride.
IMO, we don't know enough about how the repair costs will work VS amount of C-bills gained to have anything more than a guessing game debate.

That's not a problem, that's a blessing!
The Fire-Supports will have a field-day.
Agree

If everything is balanced then why would the lights win over the assaults? Just a little bit of a logic fail there, mate.
Agree.

1-v-1 deathmatch, Atlas is the right choice every time.
Disagree. Maybe in a 90 meter diameter steel cage mach. IMO, the stock Atlas is an average assault mech, not a wonder to behold.

The atlus can't instantly turn and that hunch is not going to just stand there waiting for the atlus to turn. That Hunch is going to be hugging the back of that atlus.
Unless they significantly deviate from the TT rules, the stock Hunchback is only marginally faster than the stock Atlas. Run speed of 6 vs run speed of 5. Getting behind him is not going to be easy.

The devs said you get a flat amount of C-bills and can buy any one mech and customise it right from the get go and then still have some $ over.
I would very much like to see a link to this post, for context and date.

If everyone's gung ho statement "A Jenner can/will kill an Atlas" is true, the game will fail.
I agree with the sentiment, but not with the specifics. Jenners can and will kill Atlases. I would ask, "How often?" and "Under what circumstances?"

Only two hunchbacks? pft I got this hehe :D
I think 2 Hunchbacks vs an Atlas is a great matchup. If I had to set Vegas odds, I would say 3:2 in favor of the Hunchbacks

Well in this thread, we have role discussions, the insanity is balanced among the posts. B)
Agree, strongly. About 90% of the time I prefer Fire Support/Command. About 10% of the time, I brawl.

Devs have gone on record as saying there will be no tonnage or BV restrictions in the current game modes.
I would very much like to see a link to this post, for context and date.

Light mechs have other options
If there are take 'n holds, they can get there faster.
They can scout
They can NARC/TAG/C3
They can quickly support areas, or go between multiple battle fields
They can flee
An assault has none of this. It has nothing but killing.
Agree, mostly. I like to think that the assault mech can hold ground and challenge others holding ground.

Read in the Devs answers about the founder's mechs.
You will start with mechs of the lowest tier and make your way (grinding) to the best ones. That makes sense: the Trebuchet is a mech at least a tier lower than the Catapult.
Just to be clear, you won't start with an Atlas (unless you are a Founder).
I do not recall anything like this in the MWO Dev's blogs. Please cite your source.

I still want to see the Mackie as a starting variant :(

PS - It would not let me post with so many quotes, so I edited quotes into italics

your gonna have alot of that the 1st week or so, till either people learn to play the game or they stop playing i just hope that the community as a whole will be willing to help other people who have no idea what their doing. i know we're going to have those ppl and the kids that are just gonna stomp through and then rage when the little scouts walk all over them but theres also going to be those people that really want to enjoy the game and learn the in's and out's that might get scared away if their getting pwnd by vets that wont lend em any advice or even give em a chance

I'm already going to try my hardest to help out the new players. No worries from looking at where my sig is post to be.

Maybe the devs will have the game where the new pilot can choose out of the 4 weight classes after they recommend what mech would be best for the pilots role that they chose to start with. I believe that would help with deterring players from resenting their first mech choice.
