Hello,
I was wondering how limited this was going to be in game. The founder pack will allow a custom paint
job but what are the limits or to put it simply, how many do we get? I remember in Mech Mercs we could go to a few websites and download skin packs for our mechs install them on our machines and we'd be all set. I was wondering if this or something similar would or is going to be allowed in MWO?

The developers have mentioned you'll be able to paint your Mech in a limited way through the Mechlab, but I doubt we'll be seeing completely custom paintjobs.

a pipedream for sure, but i hope the devs would someday implement something like the customization system from chromehounds, or forza motorsport for another source of inspiration. some of the custom paintjobs were mindblowing.

as for phasics' question... yes haha. it would be a form of visual trolling, something appropo for the battlefield and has a rich history in decorating war machines.

Thing is, if you allow total freedom I can't see it not being open to abuse; How about 100% alpha-chan skins?
Ok, that's an old one which about every game has dealt with by now, but you see my point.

Stupidly hi-res skins which take an age to force-push to other people's clients?
Stupidly lo-res skins which make it look like shareware Quake1?
All the possibilities for the game's image to be tarnished by racist or other non-pc images? (think of teh children!!1)

My sincere hope at the moment, keeping things within the bounds of practicality, is that each mech will have a number of different locations that each can use a different material, and a range of suitable materials can be chosen.

This would give the greatest freedom within the bounds of practicality imo, as folk who've done a bit of mapping or 3d modelling will know that as long as you can apply different materials to each face, you can do an awful lot of creative stuff with relatively few meshes..

I doubt devs will allow full custom skins. They would probably sell patterns or decals.

Would be ok if its only seen by you I guess.
Do we really want total freedom that everyone can see ? I am not all that crazy about seeing Hello Kitty Mechs running around.

It would be nice to be able to have a choice in the Mechlab to be able to pick skins, for a cost tho.

you won't be able to have user0made custom paint/decals because of copyright, liability, and server-side storage

hopefully we will see paints and decals in the mechlab that we can earn in-game or pay for

Yeah, I didn't read the thing about the founders' mechs to mean that it was a custom paint-job. Rather, I read it as being that you get a unique paintjob for the founders' mechs that won't be able to be duplicated, otherwise.

I'd heard murmurings that we were going to later have access to paint schemes for our 'mechs, and there would be some degree of customization for it. For example, two or three color patterns that you could plug in hexadecimal code into in order to set your own hues.

That's something that makes a lot more sense. Besides barring skins for the sake of bandwidth, who's going to stop the one guy from using photoshop to give an atlas boobs and a cooch ripped from their favorite pornographic images?

custom skins are never going to happen because of TTP, there are just to many immature people on the internet.

Every clan, guild and group of friends would want something for thier units, and why not, since its free to play let people purchase it, heck let people contact the company and pay to have a full custom pain job, why not?

News Flash. Piranha releases costume paint jobs for mechs!

In other news MechWarrior Online has gone under. Billy's mom sued them out of buisness because her son was killed by a mech painted up like a large [censored].

would be cool if we could paint wepons dif colours as if they where salvaged off other mechs, perhaps youll be able to do a 255 colour scheme on cetrain skins so they can be any colour you like that and premade mix and match decals is probly as much as your going to get out of mech skin customization

It would be nice "if" the Dev's would let players submit custom skins to be voted on and the top rated ones would then be added into the game

I am for custom skins, but I think the download requirement for everyone to view them would be high.

I just hope PGI won't bar the way for modders. Other games like X3:Terran Conflict regularly add some of the best features/mods in their patches. There's people out there that can churn out skins in no time and they like to share. Those skin packs would be optional and would only be seen by those who install them, so it's no big deal I think. Just saying ...
