Imo the flamer is like the ams, ams weighs .5 tons and counters 20 percent of an lrm 20, which weighs 10 tons, making the virtual sacrafice of the enemy greater then your own. Well the flamer is the same way, it weighs .5 tons and counters the cooling effect of double heat sinks weighing more the themselves, unfortunately on both user and target. However the heat created by the flamer is determined by the users current heat, using them while cool barely produces heat for user but same affect on target no matter. They also offer the side bonus of crits and a little bit of damage. Overall they can certainly be useful, except sadly their range is AWFUL

If your heat stays low enough the flamer can be pretty good since at low heat levels its heat production is tiny. Just keep in mind when installing flamers in smurfy, smurfy doesn't think flamers make heat

Source: 13 flamer nova..... i got bored, actually put flamers on my brawling atlas to, chain firing 2 flamers can be effective indeed to give yourself the upper hand

Shar wolf you stalker lol

If you get in close a lot and have a weight to spare, a flamer is actually decently useful for blinding enemies.

It's especially amusing in a melee if they start shooting wildly hitting friendlies.

They work like this.

Edit: don't listen to anyone who tells you it's useful. If you equip a flamer, even as a joke, you're beyond lost.

Personally the only use I've found for flamers is on very fast mech (especially a Commando at top speed) for harassment and blinding purposes. On slower mechs they don't tend to be worth it.

Fun fact about flamers: if you equip two and place them in the same group then set that group to chain fire, you will generate 0 heat from your flamers.

Thank you very much for your inputs, I guess I won't be saving up for my 12 flamer nova ^^. I don't know much about battletech lore, but I hope that one day they implement a heavy flamer, it's a shame to see such a unique weapon be so underwhelming.

Flamers are very bad right now, but they need to stay that way. CC has no place in an FPS.

I've seen people use these effectively. However, I haven't had much success. This could be my error, but to be honest, I don't really think so. Flamer suck in my opinion. =]

Flamers are just lol-tastic.

Lore-wise they are supposed to eject plasma...like from the Sun.
Couldnt that be used to that sink heat from the mech using them?

Wouldnt that make them blindingly bright? Like a MIG welder? Or a...plasma cutter???
Wouldnt it also cut right through armor/internals like a plasma cutter?

And they were meant to be used on infantry... B) Oh sorry, no crimes against humanity here, they had a dual use...'starting fires'...

They should do devastating damage at very close range. 20m you get 5 damage/second, some heat damagae as well.
Ive used simple plasma cutters to cut through inch thick plate steel.

Just what could be used with a fusion reactor instead of an industrial wall-outlet???
