Exit the game. Open up your client folder and find the shader cache (called Cache) and delete it. Not a permanent fix. Do not reinstall over this minor bug.

Does this happen to you regularly? Most people rarely (if ever) get this bug and when they test the vision modes next game they are working fine.
I've heard people associate this bug with typing during pre-game or being alt tabbed during loading. etc. but its so random and rare most people don't fret it it seems.

A PGI dev following Lordred's posts about Temporal AA 'ghosting' and such, also gave us this handy thing.
r_hdrrendering=0
Insert it into your user.cfg and you should be able to have fully functional thermal vision in DX11 with MSAA.

I just tried it and it appears that AntiAliasing gets disabled when you have that option in the user.cfg file. It also breaks TXAA.

I tried this fix.
It didnt help though.
I still get major fps drops, when in thermal and when smoke is involved. If I have to run through smoke its basically unplayable.
You know, why mwo is losing more and more players?
Cause devs leave issues like this or major balance issues untouched for decades.
It takes them a kazillion years to ever react.
This grave error has been around from the start. And yet, in 2016 apparently its still here.
Instead of fixing things like this they release mech pack after mech pack after mech pack.
All about the money, eh?.

Did you email support with your system specs and logs? I've not heard of people having this issue so it must not be widespread.

One, that's an old, different problem than the current black screen bug that is kinda popular.
And keep in mind -- this is about a Black Screen during Thermal bug. It has nothing to do with frame rate issues.
Two, if you're suffering frame rate issues with thermal vision or smoke, you have an issue with particles most likely. Which in turn kinda sounds like a CPU issue.
What is your machine's specs? (Right click: Computer -> Properties.)
What "percentage" of the CPU is dedicated to MWO when you have the game on? (CTRL ALT DELETE = Processes of Task Manager). If it's a really high percentage, you've found your problem. If anything has a really high percentage -- then that would likely be the problem.
Does your frame rate get faster if you look away from particles? Slow down when looking at a large area and speed up when you look at just a wall with nothing else visible?
If so -- the problem sadly isn't on PGI's end. Yes, they could do 'better', but no matter how good they streamline rendering the fact is they can't make up for dinosaur hardware. If they make the game playable on all the old computers it wouldn't be all that great for the rest of us.
--------
ALSO: Keep in mind, PGI has recently put in 2k textures on everything. This is going to require adjustments to graphics settings. Before the last patch, "Very High" was basically "Medium." Now "Very high" is "Very high."
*Almost everything.
