I've both headcapped myself and blown out my legs from overriding. I just wish override was a toggle, because if I'm overriding chances are I'm the last one standing and I want to get as much damage in as possible.

Exactly. This is why I want to overide. Not to keep firing (unless I'm the last one on the team and I'm dying in a hail of laser and dakka). I don't know why people think "Overide = more alpha". That wasn't what I was getting at. I simply get the impression that overiding a shut down in combat and retreating causes less harm to my mech than shutting down and getting alpha'd twice in the face before I can retreat.

As far as my experience says, shut down is what forcibly reduces the time to cooldown, just because moving and jumping increases heat, which you both do in override. It also makes you a less favorable target in group/group engagements, since you stop visually attract attention by "merging with the environment". This is a favorable choice in fire-support role.
In close combat though, you just need never to overheat, one way or another. Thus, I never use override. Never.

100+% is the threshold for taking damage while overridden. 125% is the threshold for taking minor damage while shut down. 150% is the threshold for taking nasty damage while shutdown.
Videos have demonstrated it's possible to reach beyond 450% before being 'doomed to die'.

Yeah, any mech I plan to take into close combat I practice firing sequences that won't let me overheat. I memorize where I can fire what weapon group without overheating. I make extra weapon groups that I can switch to while at near-max heat to let myself cool down.
And then I screw up and overheat anyway. Damn it.

I read somewhere that shutting down improves heat dissipation. I'll have to try to find that to see if I can corroborate it.
