Abrams tanks aren't powered by reactors. I like to imagine that the ammo explosion is really just the trigger and the explosion that kills the mech is the core. Honestly, if you have to rationalize the explosion, you're missing the point.
Hey I'm all for cooler and flashier explosions, don't get me wrong. It would be great to see some type of really cool visuals when a mech gets taken out, lots of flash and bang

Not just that it did some damage to the mechs in the Mechwarrior 4 game I don't know about table top. I know this because I used to play Mechwarrior 4 it was a pretty cool light show.

Agreed lets leave that feature from MW4 out of it and just make it eye candy.

The Abrams carries its ammo in an armored storage unit that has blow off panels designed to vent any explosion upwards away from the crew (kinda like CASE in MWO). During Desert Storm, there was one Abrams that got bogged down and the decision was made to destory it in place. 3 shots later from a friendly Abrams at close range, they retrieved the tank and brought it back to base as it wasn't destroyed, and even sent the turret back home for study. So how did this ammo explosion occur and damage a tank next to it, especially as the rounds are stored pointing upwards so how did 3 shoot sideways to hit another tank?
And considering how many times I've had to deal with infantile players deciding how hilarious it is to shoot their own team at the begining of a match, I'd rather not tempt fate by giving them the chance to explode next to me as well. Kamikaze tactics should be left out of MWO.
But my point with ammo explosions in "this game" is most times, not very many people bother to use Case as the ammo cooking off and explosions are minimal in terms of doing real harm. And if a person stores ammo in locations IE legs where Case can not be used... if that cooks off, the chance of that ammo and explosion doing harm not only to you but others, should go up ten fold. There just is not as much in a leg than there is in say the torso, to contain a mass ammo explosion, and it should show lol.

they really need to bring this back.
Hey I'm all for showy explosions and effects, and yah ammo explosions should have a real cool graphic effect, one where anyone seeing it will be saying 'Oh his ammo just cooked off'. The closed beta ammo detonation was much better than what we currently have. I just don't want to see mechs detonating and taking surrounding units out with them, allowing for 'suicide' tactics and griefing from the type of player that gets kicks from back shooting teammates. I'd love an effect where if a mech's ammo went up or its destroyed you get a big boom followed maybe by a small shockwave effect centered on the unit. Nothing that damages others (maybe a little rattle and shake effect).
