The rage about gold mechs started with when they were first announced.
People tend to forget, because of the position change. but when Gold Mechs were first announced. it was LITERALLY 1 MECH FOR 500 USD!!!!!
Literally... one...mech. Wanted a gold Kitfox... cool, you got 1 gold, prime variant Kitfox. [yes I know gold Kitfox is a hugely stupid idea to buy if that's all you were getting, and that's kinda my point here.]
You got that gold kitfox, the gold warhorn, the gold bar cockpit item, and THAT WAS IT.
500 bux, 1 mech with a shiny skin.
The other thing people forget, is that when you have something super shiny, that other people can't afford, people get jealous. I've dropped well over 1k on this game over 3, nearly 4 years now. But even I had the sense to look at that initial release and question why the hell I'd even consider dropping .5k on a single mech.
So there was initial backlash over the fact that they were selling 1 mech with a couple of bonus items for 500 bucks. So they added in the top tier pack, at 240, that ment that a gold mech was now essentially an additional 260 ontop of that initial price.
Still too rich for even my blood.
if the price of gold mech's had been, say. 350 for a top tier pack and a gold mech. Then I may have actually bought one. Hell I may have even snagged it if the mechs had been 400. But at 500 bucks for a gold pack... that just. That's an insane amount of cash for a singular mech. Hell even with the added value of the top tier pack added in, you're STILL looking at a price of 260USD for a SINGLE MECH.
Might I add, a Single mech, which is artifically "limited" in production. As digital content cannot be limited by anything but artificial means. Those files still exist, and the mech could be reconstrcted elsewhere with the "exclusive" golden skin. So the idea that it's an exclusive deal is just insane to me.
