I know the 780s use a lot more power, but in my area consumption is not a big deal and my PSU is up to the task.
Or should I wait for holiday sales? Not in a big rush.

I don't think the GTX 780s will linger for years, the way the poorly-regarded GTX 480s did …

I still have two of those GTX 480's running full time in one of the 'backup' rigs that resides at a friends house.

I would wait for the holidays if you can hold off, and even at current pricing, I would pick the 970 any day.

Edit: If they are ever in stock!

I have an auto notify set up when the ASUS becomes available. I like the fact it already has a backplate. EVGA gives the option to get one in the mail. Why it doesn't come with one I don't know. I also heard the EVGA needs a BIOS flash to 1.1.

Where I'm from, there are places selling the 780 more expensive than the 970, which completely baffles me

The reason why?
1. if you manually set the fan's to 75% (ok not really quiet anymore :-) ) the card maintains boost freq of 1084 MHz all the time, good for your FPS
2. I overclocked the I73770K to 4200MHz as well
Now why I'm telling all this?
3. MWO in 2560x1600 nearly always 60FPS (slide drops to 50FPS)
So, in my opinion the GTX780 for 300$ is a good deal, mine was 650€ - that's 845$.
P.s.
What I found out lately is, don't forget your CPU. MWO stall's or has sudden FPS drops do to CPU limitations, so a potent CPU could do more for you than a new GPU.
Anyway do what most suits you.

The best 970 that money can buy at the moment is the Gigabyte G1 variant. It's got a 6+8 pin config vs the regular 6+6, and really nice heatsinks not only on the main gpu chip, but also on the vrm's. The thing can reach 1500mhz on boost without a voltage increase. Also, I've never seen it go over 65C, and it is dead silent. It's a little more than MSRP, but I would say it's completely worth it.
Next bit of advice, the newegg in stock notification tool is much too slow. Normally it's good enough, but nowhere close with how popular these 970's are. Try using nowinstock.net , its really nice and quick about updating you about whatever store you shop at(Newegg, amazon, ncix, etc...). You can sign up to get email or text alerts. That's how I was able to track down the Gigabyte I had mentioned up above. Good luck in your search

The 780's cost a lot to produce, so the bulk price is pretty high - if they cut price much more they're losing money.

The 780's are discontinued. Best to get rid of them if you have them in stock imo. Nobody with half a brain is going to pay 970 money for it.
